Last week I signed off with Starship Flight 13 still climbing and no idea how it would end. It ended well — well enough that the world's biggest rocket finally has a payload résumé. Then a wildfire came over the ridge at one of the three places on Earth that can hear our spacecraft, a flagship telescope quietly announced it's launching nine months early, and a rover I've driven in a sandbox got dragged into a fight about the Moon. Here's the week.

🚀 Starship finally hauled something

On Friday evening, SpaceX's Starship lifted off from Starbase, all 33 Super Heavy Raptor 3 engines lit — the exact thing that refused to happen during the July 16 T-0 abort. After hot-staging, the ship coasted uphill and did what no Starship had done before: it opened the dispenser slot near its nose and pushed out 20 Starlink V3 satellites, one at a time, six of them carrying cameras aimed back at the heat shield. SpaceX says it talked to every single one over both radio and laser links and pulled telemetry down from them. The ship also relit a Raptor in space — the small, unglamorous demo that has to work before anything lands on the Moon. About an hour and five minutes in, it came down for a soft, intact splashdown in the Indian Ocean and kept transmitting, which means engineers got tile imagery from a vehicle that survived instead of a debris field.

The booster is the asterisk. On the landing burn only 10 of 13 Raptors relit, and it was down to five at the water — a hard arrival, and the vehicle was lost. For a program whose whole economic argument is catching that booster on the tower, that's the number to watch on Flight 14. But the deploy worked, the ship came home whole, and this is the first time Starship has been a launch vehicle rather than a test article.

🔥 Fire reached one of our three ears on the solar system

Also on Friday, a wildfire west of Madrid forced NASA to evacuate roughly 90 people from the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex at Robledo de Chavela, about 65 km outside the city; Spanish authorities cleared the whole town. This is not a nice-to-have site. The Deep Space Network is three stations — Madrid, Goldstone, Canberra — spaced about 120° apart so that as the Earth turns, someone is always pointed at whatever we have flying beyond the Moon. Madrid holds a 70-meter dish plus five 34-meter antennas.

An emergency-response team got back on site on July 25 and the news was better than the photos suggested: damage mainly to pavement and surrounding vegetation, no significant structural damage to the antennas or buildings. ESA's 35-meter Cebreros station, 77 km west of Madrid, also appears to have come through it. NASA rolled Madrid's tracking passes onto Goldstone and Canberra under the usual follow-the-sun handoff, so nothing went unheard. What sticks with me as an ops person is how thin the margin is: Goldstone's own 70-meter dish is already down until 2028 for repairs and upgrades. We run the entire solar system's comms on a handful of irreplaceable dishes, and one of them just had a fire line drawn across its access road.

🔭 Roman is early. Actually early.

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is on track to launch August 30 at 7:26 a.m. Eastern on a Falcon Heavy from Kennedy. Propellant loading is done; encapsulation into the fairing is expected within about three weeks. The part worth sitting with: Roman's formal commitment date was May 2027. It is flying nine months ahead of that, inside its budget. "Complex things are hard to bring in on schedule and on budget, and this team has lived within its resources and is delivering nine months early," said NASA astrophysics division director Shawn Domagal-Goldman. Project manager Jackie Townsend's read was more operator-flat: "The project is right where we need to be as we approach launch."

Roman carries a 2.4-meter mirror — Hubble-class — but with a field of view vastly wider, and it heads to the Earth–Sun L2 point for a five-year primary mission running three big infrared surveys aimed at dark energy and exoplanets. Pair it with Rubin's visible-light sky survey and the back half of this decade gets very good at noticing things that change.

🤖 The Perseverance twin, and what a billion dollars buys

This one is personal. NASA's plan, announced June 30, is to take OPTIMISM — the Operational Perseverance Twin, the full engineering model of Perseverance that lives in the sandbox at JPL — and convert it into PROMISE, a rover for the lunar south pole in the early 2030s. This week the Planetary Society put a number on it: $723 million to $1.33 billion to develop, launch, and operate for a year, benchmarked off VIPER and Phoenix. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman rejected the figure outright: "if PROMISE costs even 20% of your low-end estimate, we simply will not fly it."

Both things can be true, and the interesting engineering is in the gap. OPTIMISM is a real rover, but it is a ground rover — its parts were never qualified for launch loads, vacuum, or a lunar night, and it carries no flight instruments. And polar night means it likely needs a radioisotope generator, of which NASA has exactly one spare; Isaacman argues the plutonium is decaying in storage whether we use it or not. The cost people worry about the opposite ledger: spend the spare RTG here and some other planetary mission doesn't fly. My own bias, having watched a rover team rehearse every drive on a twin before sending it to Mars: OPTIMISM's day job is being the thing you break first. Losing that testbed while Perseverance is still driving is a real cost too, and it doesn't show up in either estimate.

⭐ Betelgeuse has a friend

A century-old suspicion got settled this week. Using the SPHERE instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile, a team led by Miguel Montargès at the Observatoire de Paris–PSL published the clearest image yet of Betelgeuse B, a companion star orbiting the red supergiant — close in, buried in the glare of a star hundreds of thousands of times brighter. The winning frame was taken back in December 2024, timed for the moment the companion was predicted to sit farthest from Betelgeuse as seen from Earth. It comes in heavier than predicted, roughly two to three solar masses. "This is the conclusion of a century-long quest," Montargès said, and that's not hype: astronomers have been inferring a companion from Betelgeuse's brightness wobbles for about that long without ever seeing one. The technique that got there is exoplanet hardware — extreme adaptive optics and coronagraphy — pointed at a problem it wasn't built for. Now the open question is what a nearby companion does to a star everyone expects to go supernova.

👀 On deck

  • Three spacewalks in August. Aug. 6, 13, and 25. Station commander Jessica Meir and flight engineer Anil Menon go out first at 7:35 a.m. EDT on the 6th for about six and a half hours, prepping the ISS for its seventh roll-out solar array. Later EVAs swap a comms antenna and run power and data cables.
  • A quiet, busy launch week. Falcon 9 flew the classified NROL-95 for the NRO from Cape Canaveral at 3:10 a.m. ET Thursday — the seventh flight of that booster — plus another 24 Starlink from Vandenberg. CASC sent a Long March 7A up from Wenchang on the 29th with Tianlian-3-01, a relay satellite for the Tiangong station.
  • $500 million for big satellites. K2 Space closed a Series D at a $6.8 billion valuation — more than double its December mark — on the back of over $1 billion in signed contracts. See who else is flying commercially on the private dashboard.
  • Starliner is still unscheduled. Its next flight is cargo-only, no earlier than Q4, and it was conspicuously missing from NASA's announced fall and winter station manifest. "We will fly it when it's ready to go and when we have a spot for it on ISS," said NASA's Bill Spetch.
