A big week: a launch company bought a satellite network, NASA floated sending a Mars stand-in to the Moon, and Blue Origin redrew its launch pad. Here's what mattered — and where to dig in.
🚀 Rocket Lab bets $8 billion on Iridium
On June 29, Rocket Lab (Nasdaq: RKLB) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Iridium Communications (Nasdaq: IRDM) for $54 a share in cash and stock — roughly an $8.0 billion enterprise value. The move fuses Rocket Lab's launch and satellite-manufacturing lines with Iridium's global L-band network, spectrum and 500-plus partner ecosystem, turning a launch provider into a vertically integrated space operator squaring up against SpaceX and Amazon. Markets liked it: RKLB jumped about 16% and Iridium soared roughly 25%; the deal is expected to close in mid-2027. It capped a remarkable stretch. On June 22, Rocket Lab flew the U.S. Space Force's VICTUS HAZE mission just 16 hours and 42 minutes after getting the call — a sub-24-hour responsive-launch record I wrote about in Sixteen hours from a phone call to orbit. Four days later, on June 26, it notched its 10th consecutive launch with 100% success (for Synspective).

🌑 A Mars-Yard stand-in may go to the Moon
This is the one I can't stop thinking about. On June 30, NASA said it's studying PROMISE — the Polar Rover for Observation, Mapping and In-Situ Exploration — which would repurpose OPTIMISM, the full-scale engineering twin of Perseverance and Curiosity that has spent its entire working life in JPL's Mars Yard. It's the testbed operators drive to rehearse commands on Earth before sending them to the real rovers on Mars. Because it's powered by a radioisotope generator, it doesn't need sunlight — a serious advantage in the permanently shadowed craters of the lunar south pole. Administrator Jared Isaacman said the mission is still being defined, but "there's very little that would hold us back from making use of that hardware."
A personal note: I spent countless hours testing the OPTIMISM rover in the Mars Yard — integrating it, writing electrical integration procedures, testing sandbox flight software, and verifying that state-of-the-art autonomous behaviors like AEGIS worked before we deployed them to Mars. I never imagined we'd end up looking at a potential Moon rover — but if y'all ever need a Space Mechanic to fly up and fix it once it's on the surface, I'm your guy. ;)

🌙 Blue Origin redraws its pad — and Blue Moon clears vacuum testing
After May's New Glenn hot-fire test ended in a fireball at Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 36, Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp said on June 30 the company won't rebuild the same pad. Instead it's moving to a new hybrid horizontal/vertical configuration at LC-36 — a rethink of how New Glenn is prepared and launched. NASA's Isaacman has cautioned the site may not be fully restored until 2028. The brighter note: Blue Origin's uncrewed Blue Moon Mark 1 ("Endurance") cargo lander finished thermal-vacuum testing in Chamber A at Johnson Space Center, keeping a lunar delivery on the manifest for later this year.
