Wednesday evening, a few million people in northern Spain stopped what they were doing, looked up, and watched the Sun go out. That's the week. Around it: a wounded spacecraft got new brains uploaded and started flying again, Webb found water in about the least hospitable neighborhood in the galaxy, two American rockets that were supposed to fly this year quietly admitted the year is getting short, and an astronaut who launched on three different kinds of spacecraft turned in his badge.

🌑 Europe got its eclipse
The Moon's shadow came ashore over Siberia, ran across eastern Greenland and the west coast of Iceland, and finished over northern Spain and a sliver of northwestern Portugal — mainland Europe's first totality since 1999, and Spain's first in more than a century. Maximum duration was 2 minutes 18 seconds, out over the water west of Iceland. Spain got a shorter one, low and close to sunset, which is the version photographers dream about and meteorologists dread. The skies cooperated. Crowds packed hilltops outside Valladolid, Palencia, and Teruel with lawn chairs and applauded when the corona came out.
The part I keep re-reading is how NASA played the geometry. If totality on the ground tops out at 2:18, you go get more of it: a WB-57 high-altitude jet staged out of Iceland flew along the shadow track at 50,000 feet and about 460 mph, stretching its own totality to nearly three minutes. On the nose is SAMI, four cameras shooting at least 20 frames per second in visible and infrared — and the altitude matters as much as the speed, because the infrared bands they want are eaten by the lower atmosphere before they ever reach a ground telescope. Separately, university teams launched 80 balloons from Iceland and six from Spain, starting 18 hours before the eclipse and running 8 hours past it, to watch the atmospheric boundary layer react to a shadow moving over it. Three science targets: how prominences hang suspended above the surface, how the corona gets to a million degrees while the surface sits near 5,500, and how coronal material becomes solar wind. An eclipse is still the cheapest coronagraph ever built, and we now chase it at Mach 0.6.

🛰️ They uploaded new brains to LINK, and it worked
Follow-up to last week's best engineering story. Katalyst Space's LINK vehicle — the spacecraft sent to grab NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and push it to a higher orbit — lost attitude control after deployment and spent weeks tumbling. Two of its three reaction wheels are dead and its cold-gas thruster system is degraded. The team had already used an electric propulsion thruster as an improvised detumble system to bleed the spin from about 9 degrees per second down to 1.47.
On Tuesday, NASA reported the next step landed: Katalyst uploaded a flight software update with new attitude control algorithms written for the actuators LINK still has, and it reestablished control. That is the whole discipline in one sentence — you don't get the hardware back, so you rewrite the controller around the hardware that answers. LINK is now running a series of burns to phase its orbit with Swift's, with NASA evaluating performance at each step. The clock is real: Swift is at roughly 216 miles and falling, and NASA says an orbit raise gets substantially harder below about 185 miles. Rendezvous is targeted for late August.

🔭 There is water 0.55 light-years from Sagittarius A*
On Tuesday, ESA and NASA published a Webb result that quietly rearranges an assumption. Pointing MIRI at IRS 3, a dying star sitting just 0.55 light-years from Sagittarius A — the Milky Way's four-million-solar-mass central black hole — the team found oxygen-rich silicate dust and, for the first time around this object, water*.
The galactic center is supposed to be the worst place in the galaxy to try to make dust: intense radiation, violent winds, tidal shear. IRS 3 is about six solar masses, roughly 72 million years old, shedding mass into an envelope some 10,000 astronomical units across, and it is calmly assembling the same dust chemistry you'd find around an ordinary evolved star in a quiet suburb of the disk. The spectrum also settled a decades-old argument — earlier work had IRS 3 pegged as carbon-rich; the first continuous mid-infrared spectrum of it says oxygen-rich. Lead author Florian Peißker's framing is the right one: dust production is remarkably resilient. Which matters beyond one star, because dust is what planets eventually get built out of.

🚀 Two rockets, two shrinking calendars
Within about 24 hours, the two most-watched American rockets that aren't flying yet both moved right.
Firefly confirmed Alpha Block 2's debut has slipped to Q4 2026. Block 2 isn't a tweak: the vehicle grew about seven feet for larger liquid oxygen tanks on both stages, the batteries and avionics are now built in-house, the composite structures are stronger, and the booster's thermal protection is thicker with a white exterior coat. All of that traces back to two bad days — the April 2025 Flight 6 rupture after stage separation, which exposed thin thermal protection, and the booster that exploded during acceptance testing in Briggs, Texas that September. CEO Jason Kim's next steps are acceptance testing, delivery to Vandenberg, static fire, payload integration, launch. R&D spending rose $25.8 million year over year, most of it Block 2. Firefly still wants three Alpha flights before the year ends, which is arithmetic I'd like to see work out.
Rocket Lab said the window for a 2026 Neutron debut "is narrowing," with first stage tank production still tracking a Q4 delivery. The pacing item is integrated static fire at the Virginia pad, and Peter Beck named it plainly: stage testing "is always the thing that gets your adrenaline running because you have fully fueled vehicles on the pad." His stated goal isn't flight one, it's flight ten in the shortest possible time — the right target, and the harder one. Neutron already has a customer waiting: the $397 million Space Force SB-AMTI award announced August 4, plus a new dedicated Kepler Communications launch for 2028 or later.

🏛️ Space Command starts unpacking in Huntsville
Thursday, Gen. Stephen Whiting gave a status update from Redstone Arsenal on the headquarters move that has been a political football since 2021. More than 100 people have relocated, expected to hit 200 by year's end, out of an eventual 1,800. Roughly half the headquarters staff moves by 2028; the permanent facility is targeted for 2031, with full integration around 2032. The Pentagon's FY2027 request carries $951 million for design, construction, and IT. The service mix is worth noting — about a quarter Space Force, a quarter Army, a quarter Air Force, the rest mostly Navy with a small Marine contingent. That's a joint command, not a Space Force command, and the staffing reflects it. Colorado fought the original selection, the Biden administration paused it, the current administration restarted it in 2025. Whichever side of that you land on, a 2032 completion date means the organization spends most of a decade operating out of two states at once.

🧑🚀 Fincke logs out
Mike Fincke left NASA on Wednesday, exactly 30 years after joining. Four flights, 549 days in space, nine spacewalks, two ISS commands (Expedition 18 and Expedition 74). He is one of only 13 people who have launched aboard three different types of spacecraft — Soyuz twice, Space Shuttle Endeavour, and Crew Dragon Endeavour. His last mission ended early: on January 7 he abruptly lost the ability to speak for about 20 minutes, and Crew-11 came home in January in what's been reported as the first medical evacuation in the station's 25 years of operation. "After exactly 30 years, I am departing NASA, but I remain deeply committed to the work of exploration." Three vehicle types across three decades is a career that spans an entire architecture change in how the U.S. gets people to orbit.

- Spacewalk, Tuesday. U.S. Spacewalk 97 moved from August 13 to August 18, 8:35 a.m. EDT. Anil Menon and ESA's Sophie Adenot will swap a space-to-ground antenna on the Z1 truss — pull the old unit, retrieve the spare from external stowage, install, stow. That antenna is the high-rate pipe between Houston and the station, so this is plumbing you notice only when it's gone. (NASA)
- Chang'e 7, August 24. CNSA's lunar south pole mission — orbiter, lander, rover, and a hopping probe built to look inside permanently shadowed craters for water ice — on a Long March 5 from Wenchang. Rocket and spacecraft are at the site. The open question from last week stands: CASC's Long March 7A failure on August 10 was the country's fourth of 2026, and whether its findings touch the shared YF-100 engine family decides if this date holds.
