Sloth and Manatee

Recently I was in an airplane flying into SFO (San Francisco) and there was a holdup so we had to circle around for a while before landing, so around we went, over Northern California, looking at the ocean and then looking at the mountains and then looking at the ocean some more and then the mountains again and during this whole time the sun was setting.
We did three circuits and each time the sun had done more setting. And so we got to see the same sunset, three different times, from a plane.

The colors of the light hitting the plane’s wing kept changing completely. First it was a thin bit of bright pink/yellow, next it was a line of blue. Then it was just a bit of an orange grey glow.
The day is full of things like this, combinations of people and situations and art and whatever that are utterly unique and can never happen again, that unfold into more utterly unique things, but this view from the plane window of the same sunset over and over really put a fine point on it. I felt like I witnessed something.

It is the end of the school year, so my classes have had a whole year to develop their own ways of doing things. By this point they will often come into the room with something already in their head, and they will declare this as they come in. It’s such a joy to see how they gravitate toward their own groove, and their favorite materials. Although, I will say that everyone loves tape. Tape is the best. All projects can benefit from some tape.
