"Wherever we go, we are friends" -Sloth and Manatee

Sloth and Manatee

I was recently in Monterey, California, where I ran along the coast and stared at waves and seals and otters and rocks and listened to the ocean.

I very much recommend spending significant time with living things and creatures that are Not Human and don’t know what the Internet is or what money is or any of this. Remember that we are just visiting, we are part of a big tree of branches that split and grow and end, and someday this will all be overgrown with giant ferns.

I don’t know, I find this comforting.

Art!

In response to (waves hands at all this), I drew:

The majestic hippo.

Probably because hippos are a creature that does not need humans, does not care what humans think, does not operate like humans, and can also squish them. Not long ago someone posted a lengthy thread about these fellows on Bluesky that was just incredible (if you’re on there/can log in it is a worthy read), it included gems like this (it started out as a discussion of how it is basically impossible to anesthetize a hippo):

It also mentioned this:

and this:

Yes, baby hippos use crocs as TEETHING RINGS

Anyway, if you happen to be on Bluesky there’s much, much more and it’s just wild. It goes a lot of places you absolutely do not expect.

This put me in mind of Beatrice:

Things Of The Week

OMG this. This is friendship. This is what “Wherever we go we are friends” means. Please watch this short doc on a man who relocates Snowy Owls around Boston’s Logan Airport.

Wow, this is an amazing website chronicling public demonstrations and unrest in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s. I particularly remember the AIDS die-ins.

I want to see this documentary on Paul Reubens/Pee-Wee.

I recently learned of the existence of a whole school where they study attention - ? Feels like a bit of a wave of the future, where we reclaim ourselves

Okay! That's enough nonsense for now.

May you stay clear of ornery hippos or even happy hippos, may you have silky shiny tangle-free hair, won't you be my neighbor? - Betsy
