On Faraway Songs
"Wherever we go, we are friends" -Sloth and Manatee
Sloth and Manatee

It’s interesting that we talk about things as being “far” in terms of space, like when we send people around the back of the Moon that is really really “far,” but we also see things as far away that are separated from us in time. Like something is “far” in history or “long” in the past.
I think that our feelings about this are more complex than that because we can feel distance and closeness at the same time. Like, a piece of music written centuries ago, in our ears in this moment, feels - powerful. That contrast really gets to something deep within us about our relationship with the world.
We can put ourselves in proximity to one another, using art as a container, a little capsule to travel around in, a song that is faraway and right there in our self. That is very beautiful.
