Sloth and Manatee

I may have mentioned that there’s a big gang (a murder!) of crows that hang around my neighborhood. There’s gotta be about 40 of them. They are very loud and opinionated.

Their opinions appear to fall into one of two categories:

1. Opinions of each other, or what each other is doing, or who is in the better tree-top, or generally who is the most badass

2. Opinions of some Unapproved Creature they have spotted cruising around. Most likely a coyote or a raccoon or a cat (anybody who lets their cat out in this area is reallly playing a dangerous game). Squirrels seem to be fine, crow-approved. They seem okay with dogs, also. But not coyotes, man. I saw this raggedy-looking coyote go by my house, and all the crows were just yelling at it, and the coyote slunk off into the creek by our house like “jeez okay, I’m going.”

I’m told that crows can recognize people, and can even tell each other and their offspring about who is cool and who is bad news.

My favorite crow-noise other than the yelling of opinions is, the sound that immature crows make. They come off sounding like some kind of a nerdy muppet. It took me the longest time to figure out where (or from whomst) this ridiculous noise was coming from. It’s just comical and a delight.

Sometimes I look out the window and the whole place is covered in these glorious black fellows, ambling around like little old men with bad hips (or tiny Tyrannosauri) and yelling at each other, with a squirrel or two kind of mingling about like awkward party-goers. It’s all just so marvelous.
