On Big Things
"Wherever we go, we are friends" -Sloth and Manatee
Sloth and Manatee

The word “Big” is so interesting. It can be used to describe something physically, but also mentally, and also time-wise, or in terms of impact. You can have a Big Idea. Something can be a Big Deal. Maybe someone you know was being a Big Jerk.
Sometimes when a thing is Big, it is because a lot of time has passed, as in the case of a redwood tree. In that case, we stand there at its base looking up at centuries.
Sometimes a thing is so Big we don’t even really comprehend it, like the amount of the Earth covered by the Pacific Ocean. It’s hard to even ponder that. Good grief!
But then, Big is also relative. My cat seems to think I am big. Bugs find her to be very Big. A hamburger, even though it fits on a plate, can be too Big to finish.
Sometimes we freak out over a big bug or spider but really? That creature is very small.
I love tiny paintings that depict enormous landscapes. That feels like cheating, sneaking all that into there.

We will say a band or a movie has “gotten big,” as if it has somehow grown in size (this is making me think of the Peter Gabriel song). Like you’re going to see this bass player standing astride the Golden Gate Bridge or something. They occupy Big space in our minds, which again isn’t really a space? How does a thought become Big? Is it how often it is there? How much it crowds out other thoughts? Why am I talking about thoughts as if they are all together in some sort of waiting room? Why do we even say head-space?
And then there is of course a Big Big Hug.
