Not Doing Things
"Wherever we go, we are friends" -Sloth and Manatee
"Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
I attribute this wisdom to my dad, who probably said it in reference to a power tool in the garage when I was a kid.
My dad also said,
"Never let a power tool get at its own cord."
Also useful. Remember that*.
*Also super-relevant in the age of AI/Chatbots, as in, just because you can make fake everything, doesn't mean you should, and also, if you make enough fake everything, the AI will train itself on itself and eat itself. Like a power cord.
It's such a great feeling to not do something. It's freeing. Not doing something opens up a space in your existence. All of a sudden there's time there that wasn't there before. Isn't that great?
Like, Sloth and Manatee decided not to go flying into the Interdimensional Bloop just now. And that's okay! The Tardigrades kind of feel differently, though, which is also okay:
And then there's not-NOT doing things, otherwise known as, doing things.
Like, maybe you're in a habit of NOT getting some silly thing done, but then you do, and now you've not NOT done that. I feel I am spiraling at this point.
No but really, I think about this a lot. I'll have a choice and I'll ask myself, will I regret not doing this thing? Will I be sad that I did not act? Or is this a time when it is best not to go running all around?
The other day I was thinking about all the things that water is doing when you take a shower. It's hitting you, hopefully, and also going down the drain, and bouncing off the walls and door of the shower, but also turning into vapor or steam (except when somebody flushes and it's all cold for a sec but back to our topic), and on top of that, it's in the shampoo or soap or whatever you are using, and also you are made of mostly water too (as spoken on Star Trek The Next Generation: "Ugly bag of mostly water" but again back to our topic), it's also making a lot of sounds, and traveling through the pipes and out into the drain system, and maybe the pipes make noises, too. That's a lot of things. That's just in one place.
Anyway, Best of Brainwaves books are back in stock, and they make a marvelous gift. Nothing says "I care" like four hundred-plus lil smiles. And I'll sign em and put stickers in there, too.
And finally, a raccoon in a hoodie
Okay! That's enough nonsense for now.
May you do the things you wanna, may you not do the things you don't wanna, won't you be my neighbor? -Betsy
