I’ve been giving art tours to kids at the Richmond Art Center. We meet up, go over rules, equip the kids with tiny clipboards and notebooks, and off we go.
Currently we’re looking at three shows: Across Land and Sea which is student work, Upcycled Garden by Daniel Attaboy Seifert, and Art of the African Diaspora, a large group show they put up annually.
A lot of the African Diaspora show is mixed-media pieces and my most recent group went bonkers over those. Like, jumping-with-glee bonkers. So, for their after-tour project, I told the parents I was thinking about letting ‘em glue stuff themselves. The parents were all for it, so I got out a ton of glue and buttons and cardboard and they got busy. Then we drew a comic about their field trip and what they remembered and liked. I apologized to the parents for the amount of glue and small objects that would now be in their cars, but they said it’ll just mix in with all the other stuff in there and be fine. Parents are awesome.
This sort of thing is subversive at this point. We’ve gotta aggressively make space both physically and in our minds and the minds of young people. It’s like peace, it’s made and maintained. Space that’s ours, and theirs, that can’t be taken away. Every day.
