I wrote a longer thing about problem solving on computers. I feel, only fifteen years into my career as a developer, that I’m (finally) confident I can solve, or at least learn more, about most problems that confront me. I feel emboldened by folks like Julia Evans[1] or Why the Lucky Stiff[2], who take a less rigid, more tongue-in-cheek approach to programming enthusiasm. These Are Computers, I Know This[3] is the piece and I hope you enjoy it and share it with other folks who solve problems with computers.
I’m trying to get back to writing longer, essay/ish stuff. In service of that, I set up a “shorts” “micro” blog. All that stuff goes to Twitter, so you are maybe already seeing it. But if RSS is still Your Jam, there’s another feed for you.
I’m typing this from the roof deck of the Austin Public Library central branch. What a building, what a space! I feel like a dingus for taking so long to visit it. Even if you don’t need a book, check this place out. 🤘🏻great public spaces🤘🏻
We’ve been watching Our Planet on Netflix and it is fantastic. Animals and nature are simply amazing. The series is very much about the importance of changing humanity’s habits lest we lose those animals and nature. On the upside, it covers a few cases where humanity has been blocked out, like the Serengeti, or just doesn’t care to alter the environment, and nature has made a little bit of a comeback.
