Unpausing life, cursed technologies
July 5th
The feeling that life is on pause sort of overwhelmed me this week. I brainstormed ways I could unpause my life, given the circumstances. Writing more, reading more, figuring out how to fix up the house, and making music or games all came up, as you’d expect. But, none resonated strong enough that I thought, “that’s the one!”
How are you actively or tentatively unpausing your life in our strange time?
I’m Adam Keys and you’re here because, in your past, you subscribed to this newsletter of interesting things you can enjoy and/or read. If that seems unlikely and unfamiliar, well that’s our sick sad world, but you can unsubscribe (link in the footer) if you want to. But since you’re still reading, thanks! Let’s get on to the things of interest.
It is extremely warm right now. The time of the year that seems to stress the mechanisms that make a Texas house habitable. Air conditioning in particular.
I may add air conditioners to my list of cursed technologies. The canonical cursed technology is the fax machine, an unholy union of a telephone and a printer. No one wants to send a fax, few people even have a phone line anymore, and printers never last as long as they seem like they should.
Likewise, an air conditioner is the union of extensive plumbing, heating and cooling elements, and fans, all prone to failure. If you were wondering, yes my A/C is on the fritz. Thankfully, not yet to the point that we stand in front of the freezer in relief.
The media diet feels as slim as the day is warm. The Snowpiercer series is good. Mythic Quest is probably just okay, but years of playing video games makes its sharp take on gaming culture amusing. I finally saw Knives Out and it’s a delightful puzzle box.
May your your air conditioner blow cool. Have a good week!
