Less procrastination edition
Procrastination's last hurrah, the suggestion box is opened.
I’m Adam Keys, and you’re reading my blog distilled down into newsletter form. Let’s dive in!
Lately on the blog: musical universe cross-overs, better-than-average developer philosophies, make great stuff and tell people about it, compounding generates perfection (not the other way around).
I’m wrapping up a longer-for-me piece on procrastination soon. Here’a a taste.
Personally, I’d love to write an epic, timeless work of non-fiction that reframes how we think about our world. But I do not have the energy, or even a plan, to pull that off. Therefore, it’s likely I’ll read that article and empty the dishwasher. That’s not unproductive, but there’s room for improvement.
Instead I could procrastinate on the trivial stuff by tackling the ambitious but ambiguous tasks. I’m using a talent I know mostly as a vice, but applying it towards something I earnestly want to accomplish. Instead of using procrastination to distract myself, I’m using it to focus.
Then, I’m going to dial back writing on productive and creative habits. That groove is getting too well-worn.
It’s lovely when folks reply to this email with feedback, answers to questions, questions to answers, etc.! Ergo, send me ideas or feedback on what you’d like to like me to write about. Ideas currently on my desk:
- Delegation without autonomy and support is no good.
- Coherent teams use distinctive jargon.
- Measuring progress is important (but objective measures aren’t mandatory).
- How to iterate with confidence when classic/xUnit TDD isn’t feasible.
- Ideas for acquainting oneself with a new technology ecosystem or product.
- A field guide to sales-like skills that technology people need at some point.
May your task list grow shorter and your to-read pile grow more interesting!
