This week is all musical things!
This week, the wife and I trekked over to Houston to see Paul McCartney perform. It's just what you'd expect: Paul McCartney playing several decades of great music. It was great. His band is top notch and the show was lots of fun. I'm normally not patient enough to go see live music performances, but this was quite worthwhile.
There is a feeling of being in a stadium with 40K people singing along to "Hey Jude". This is a very special moment. It's hard to think about work or hobby, the flaws of the world, or where your car is parked. You're just together with a bunch of people in the middle of an amazing anthem. I highly recommend partaking of this kind of moment.
Another great kind of moment: a perfectly execute tribute to a famous song. In this case, Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum performing Prince's "Darling Nikki".
While we're talking about Prince, here is rap-group-you-haven't-heard-of-but-need-to-study Slum Village with "parody samples" of Purple Rain.
J. Dilla was a famous producer, member of Slum Village, and was called the Mozart of beats. Herein, a chamber orchestra performs adaptations of his beats.
Full symphony orchestras often play Stravinsky's Petroucka chord, which is my new ear candy.
OK, I don't know how to connect that back to Paul McCartney. Nevertheless, here's what "Live and Let Die" looks like these days. At the end of the concert in Houston, after all the pyrotechnics, Paul McCartney seemed temporarily broken. He broke out of it to play three encores.
I'm hard-pressed to top that so I'll leave it there. That said, there's a minor procedural bit to mention. I'd previously foreshadowed putting a bow on this newsletter at this point. But, the way I want to tie it up hasn't materialized yet (read: I haven't done all the research for it yet), so I'm going to keep this newsletter going until I make it happen. That said, I'll take the week off for Thanksgiving and Christmas, if necessary, because that's a sane thing sort of thing to do.
Everyone have a great week. I hope it's a short one full of food and/or football!
