This was a traveling, conference week. This week: the Ruby conference, which I’ve only missed once since 2005. That means it’s a chance for me to see my friends and have quality, face-to-face time to talk about deep topics and share some fun experiences. This year of RubyConf was no exception. It was topped off by running into one of my friends from Dallas just as he was exiting DFW airport security and I had just got off a plane. A bunch of intentional run-ins with friends capped off by a completely coincidental one.
Sometimes, life is great.
This week, another “clip show”, things you may have missed from my weblog. All of these got pretty good feedback the first time around, but I’ll add some bonus color this time around.
Marginal pennies, on tipping and why it happens. Basically, anyone who makes something for you, or makes you look better, you should tip. Doubly so for anyone who you see on a regular basis: your hair stylist, barista, favorite waiter, etc. All that said, sometimes it just feels good to tip because you can.
Ruthlessness and fighting for it, on identifying the things that you care deeply about when you’re creating something and then working to resist the temptation to compromise on them. It’s not that you shouldn’t be pragmatic, it’s that you should always turn away from taking the easy way or the path of least resistance. If it’s worth caring about, it’s worth figuring out how to make it awesome.
The two things that were stuck in my head all week: “I’ve Got Everything I Need” from the most recent Muppets movie. “The E Street Shuffle”, The Boss plus The Roots and Tom Morello.
That's all for this week, friends!
