How many movies could have been titled “We should have thought this through”? Every horror film, to start. Any disaster film. In particular, Titantic. Hey, maybe we should have considered what happens if all water in the water-tight compartments rises to the top of the walls and spills over? Hey, maybe we should actually put all the life boats on the decks? Hey, maybe I shouldn’t try to romance this girl with a jealous fiancé and an assistant with a tiny little revolver? Hey, maybe I shouldn’t just drop this multi-million dollar rock off the back of a ship and just hand it to the guy looking for it instead?
Just a thought.
Justin Gehtland shared with us The Secrets of Building Software, but surely you can crib some ideas for any endeavor. My favorites, transliterated, are “Friends don’t let friends work alone”, “Plans that go more than four weeks are comic books”, and “Software development is mostly a people problem”.
Before I moved to Austin, I’d decided I should take improv comedy classes. Little did I know that I was moving to a town with a long-standing, pretty great improv scene. Turns out there are several theaters doing improv shows every week, a few running classes, and tons of internet-connected people chatting about doing improv. Further, there are a few improv comedy festivals every year here in Austin. I had the good fortune to attend the Out of Bounds Comedy Festival this year, and it was a blast. Said festival is put together by Jeremy Sweetlamb, whose profile in the Austin Chronicle is a great read about improv and the Austin community. This has been the most unexpected and delightful surprise in moving to Austin.
Once upon a time there was a fellow named Craig. Everyday Craig would track his footsteps using an electronic gizmo. One day, Craig used his gizmo to track his steps as he explored the streets of Paris. Because of that, he decided to take an extra long walk to try and break his previous record of footsteps in a day. Because of that, he took a remarkable trip. Finally, he realized he had forgotten his electronic footstep tracking gizmo in his other pants. Since then, he’s written us a delightful essay on the whole story.
I usually use this last slot to tell you about some awesome music. This time, I want you to tell me about some awesome music. What is blowing your mind, helping you crank through work, or simply the jamming tune of the week?
