Compare and contrast:
Paul Graham’s Startup = Growth led me to a bunch of thoughts this week. You can read this essay two ways. It’s written about how startups, especially in technology, are geared towards getting bigger just a little bit every week and every month, building on compounding interest. But you can read it another way, about what a non-startup isn’t. It’s not about the transaction at the end of the tunnel, it’s not about constantly doing more things. It’s about chasing a goal in the context of the people working towards their vision.
Brian Bailey wrote about a startup as an education last month, but I just got to it. I love Brian’s angle here; a company as dynamic and hands-on as a startup offers all the challenges and lessons an ambitious person could want. Working at a startup will level you up on business, technology, personal relationships, life management and a dozen other things you didn’t even know existed. Companies shaped like startups, even if they don’t take investment, are the only way to go for Enthusiastic Thinkers like us.
I like coffee. I like comedy. I really love Alec Baldwin. Jerry Seinfeld is growing on me. All together now: “Just a Lazy Shiftless Bastard”. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is a fantastic idea, well executed.
