It has been unseasonably warm in Austin this fall and winter. We’ve basically been gifted a second spring. It’s too warm to swim, but cool enough that one can spend hours outside.
On the one hand, I’m enjoying this. My runs are more pleasant, I’ve had more chances to travel by bicycle, and I can pleasantly sit outside a neighborhood park and type this out enjoying a pleasant breeze with the sounds of people doing things in a park.
Despite that, part of me worries. Is this a one-time luxury, or part of a future cycle? Two of the past four summers in Austin have been oppressively hot droughts. An extra spring for a severe summer is probably not a good trade-off.
It’s hard to say what the future holds. We should enjoy the present, but keep our eyes on trends and trajectories. Preparation is a handy thing.
I mostly love having a service like Rdio at my disposal. Even for its gaps, the library of music available to me is phenomenal. I can dig into an amazing majority of the notable music over the past several decades. When I was a music major, my favorite class was music history. It occurred to me that this is still one of my favorite parts of music. Connecting the dots between artists, albums, and genres is my musical puzzle. Rdio makes it possible to cover ground much faster than building a library album-by-album.
That said, I miss owning albums. Its nice to have a quilt of album covers, or actual albums, to look at and appreciate your collection. Further, buying albums is way better for the artists. I’m not sure the day of buying albums is over for anyone, but I hope that something comes along that makes it easier for me to enjoy a mind-blowing spectrum of music while still collecting the outstanding stuff.
Focus mode is no replacement for a date and an expectation. A meditation from my weblog.

Have a great week, folks!
