[CDS] Day 9-14 – California, at last

The views from the road are excellent.

The California cost as seen from the highway
The waves in Northern California were wild.

We arrive in (Southern-most) California and Pacific Time, in earnest. Through the Colorado Desert to north of San Diego, up through inland California, around the east Bay Area, betwixt a heck of a lot of trees, and then along the coast. Having spent my whole life in the I-35 corridor of Texas, I have to applaud the scenery. It’s fantastic.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge (I think?)
A minor bridge over the bay.

Pro-tip: travel with an AppleTV, if you can. Never think again about weird smart TV software or signing in and out of your streaming services. Most TVs you’ll find in an AirBnb have multiple HDMI inputs. Plug in your Apple TV, join the network, and relax. Related: a HomePod (softball-sized), if you have even more space and prefer better musical listening. And: have Ethernet, will travel. It’s easy to pack, and it saved our sanity in a cottage with feeble Wi-Fi.

The 101 disappears into the distance, surrounded by smaller trees
It’s just good scenery

What a wonderful smell we’ve discovered! A thing we have said to ourselves as we pass by various roadside interests.

👎🏻Fertilizer. Crops, garlic in particular. Massive cow farms, cows as far as the eye can see. 🫠

👍🏻That Southern California smell. The cool, fresh air and proximity to the ocean.

A view along the 101. The trees are starting to get bigger.
Again with the delightful views

Minor villains you may find in an Airbnb:

  • a claustrophobic, low-pressure shower

  • a trash-can lid that refuses to stay closed

  • weak Wi-Fi (see above)

  • a bed that is listed as queen-sized but is definitely smaller than that

  • no door between the bedroom where someone is trying to sleep and the living room where someone has to do four video calls in a row 😬

  • beds placed in a corner instead of open on both sides

  • couches too small for two people to relax on

  • very uncomfortable seating, in general

A laptop and portable monitor in use.
Yet another desk setup. This AirBnb had a pretty nice lamp. Not pictured: wired Ethernet in use.

Current desk situation: workable. But the stool for this table is awful. See “uncomfortable seating” above.

Soon: we actually arrive in Oregon!
