Splitting my year
(This slug, crossing my front path slowly but successfully in May, feels like a metaphor for this year)
This was the second full year of freelancing for me, and the first where I had a "normal" year (i.e. not moving across the country, or doing a fellowship). There have been ups and downs (and lots of newsletter editions) but I'm starting 2024 feeling like I have a better sense of what's possible. In the middle of the year, I updated my professional website with something that felt both good copy and absolutely true: I'm splitting my time working on solutions stories and investigative pieces.
This year I wrote about solar farms on the town dump and tiny indoor vertical farms bringing food to urban areas. I investigated the split between insurance for homes and fossil fuel infrastructure in places hardest hit by climate change, and how banks with net-zero goals are still financing the US gas boom.
