What Northern Virginia is talking about before 9am
πŸ—³οΈ Policy & Power
  • Early voting opens today across Fairfax. Voters can cast ballots for House, Senate, and local park and human-services funding measures at three county sites starting this morning. Three constitutional amendments on abortion, gay marriage, and voting rights are also on the Nov. 3 ballot. FFXnow

  • Virginia's attorney general accuses DHS of possibly breaking state election law. Jay Jones demanded Homeland Security confirm in writing whether it directed anyone to access Virginia voters' data without permission, citing a whistleblower report on employees using voter lookup tools to hunt for noncitizen voters. State code bars disclosing that protected information to the federal government without a court order. ARLnow

  • Loudoun's board voted to pause legislative data center and substation applications. The pause runs up to 12 months, the maximum Virginia law allows, while the county finishes its review of data center policies. The board will consider a resolution Oct. 20 and wants it retroactive to Sept. 15. Loudoun County

πŸš“ Safety & Weirdness
  • An Alexandria man was convicted of attempted rape at a Groveton hotel. A Fairfax judge found Oscar Junior Barrios guilty of attempted rape and misdemeanor assault after a two-day bench trial. Prosecutors said he struck a housekeeper with a beer bottle at the Quality Inn Mount Vernon in October 2025; three other felony charges were dismissed. FFXnow

  • Karaoke at a Clarendon bar is headed for a County Board fight. Big Tony's Pizzeria & Dive Bar wants permission to host karaoke and DJs seven days a week, but county staff oppose it, citing repeated zoning violations. Staff say the bar hosted karaoke without approval and can't be trusted with the permit. ARLnow

πŸ—οΈ Money, Jobs & Development
  • Fairfax supervisors approved another housing conversion at Kingstowne Towne Center. The board unanimously backed developer BXP's plan to turn a nine-story office building into a 280-unit residential complex. Phase one converts the building to 120 units; phase two adds a five-story addition on top of the existing three-story parking garage next to that building. FFXnow

  • Vuori is eyeing a store at One Loudoun. The activewear brand is considering a roughly 4,800-square-foot space in the under-construction section between Van Leeuwen and Tatte, per The Burn. It would join Alo and Lululemon, both a few doors down. The Burn

  • A used bookstore is coming to Old Ashburn. Kevin and Claire Lemmon plan to open Twice Told Books at 20691 Ashburn Road, across from the Ashburn firehouse. They'll carry used books, buy gently used titles, and host author readings. The Burn

🍽️ Friday Foodies
  • Herndon's Navarasa started its soft opening. The upscale Indian restaurant from the Biryani Grill team took over the former Paradise Indian Cuisine space at 328 Elden Street. The menu runs long on appetizers, curries, biryanis, and tandoori, plus happy hour specials. The Burn

  • Oktoberfest season opens this weekend across Arlington and Falls Church. Eight celebrations run between now and Oct. 3, most of them free, including a three-day festival at Courthaus Social starting today and a five-brewery stretch at Astro Beer Hall in Shirlington. Crystal City throws in a mechanical bull. ARLnow

  • Westover Market's owner offers a DIY Oktoberfest playbook. Devin Hicks suggests preordering kegs or mixing six-packs to build a tasting lineup, from pilsners and Hefeweizens to bolder Maibocks. His pitch: work in local Marzens from Port City and Solace. Arlington Magazine

  • Arlington's fall menus lean hard into pumpkin spice. Bees & Tea rolled out a seasonal series including a matcha latte with pumpkin spice foam. TaquerΓa Xochi debuts a Horchata de Calabaza on Sept. 22. Arlington Magazine

⚑ Quick Hits
  • The County Board votes Saturday on $365,810 in arts grants for 18 Arlington artists and organizations. ARLnow
  • A pro-Trump group's "Data Center Revolt" bus tour rallied against Starwood's Plaza 500 project in Bren Mar. FFXnow
  • Loudoun offers a free two-day fair housing course on chronic hoarding Oct. 7 and 8 at Cascades Library. Loudoun County
  • The Wharf's free Oktoberfest brings back the Wiener 500 dachshund dash and a stein-hoisting championship Oct. 3. Secret DC
🧭 Regional Mood

The doors open this morning and Northern Virginia gets to answer the questions it has spent all year shouting about: data centers, growth, who decides. For once the arguing has somewhere to go.

That's the briefing. Look out for each other out there. See you Monday.
