• A Woodbridge hit-and-run killed a newborn hours after his mother was struck. A 24-year-old pregnant woman and a 28-year-old man were hit by a dark-colored pickup while walking through a parking lot on Richmond Highway last Thursday night. Doctors delivered her baby boy in an emergency procedure; he died from crash-related injuries. Prince William police are asking anyone who saw the collision to call 703-792-7000. • The crossing guards Fairfax cut last spring are back, at least for now. Guards returned near 11 high schools last week after a student was struck by a car near South Lakes High. The Board of Supervisors will decide next week whether to use carryover funds to keep them in place through the 2026-27 year. WTOP

• The mechanic killed under a tour bus at Wolf Trap was known nationwide as "The Bus Doctor." Andrew Wagner died when a bus collapsed onto him while he worked beneath it last week. Colleagues across the motor coach industry remember him as the person mechanics called when nobody else could fix the problem. WTOP

• Two longtime Loudoun restaurants are moving into one new Leesburg building. Smokin Willy BBQ will leave Purcellville and Deli South will leave Catoctin Circle, both relocating to a new building going up at 422 Sycolin Road next to the Walgreens. Owners Chris and Shannon Scharrer will oversee construction of the shared space. The Burn

• A dumpling brand is planting a small flag at Cascades Overlook. Little Tiger Dumplings plans to take over the roughly 800-square-foot space that last held the Doughlab doughnut shop. The menu runs to pork chive and shrimp celery dumplings, plus noodles, rice dishes and soups. The Burn

Prince William and Fairfax both spent the week counting the cost of a driver who did not slow down. One left the scene, one never had a crosswalk. The region keeps learning the same lesson about the space between cars and people, and keeps paying for it in the worst currency there is.
