What Northern Virginia is talking about before 9am
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Policy & Power
  • Virginia's AG stood up a permanent voter protection team three weeks before the midterms. Jay Jones launched a Voter Protection Section to investigate improper registration cancellations, absentee denials and voter intimidation. Early voting is already underway, and a recent court battle kept new federal mail-ballot restrictions from taking effect this fall. WTOP

  • Fairfax County wants to untangle its restaurant permitting process. A new study found the cumulative process runs more than 10 months, straining owners even when individual reviews move fine. The county issues roughly 280 permits a year across 2,500-plus food establishments. FFXnow

  • Supervisors gave themselves $20 million more headroom on the Original Mount Vernon HS redevelopment. The 10-0 vote raised the master credit line from $90 million to $110 million as the human development center project nears substantial completion next spring. The county has already drawn $58 million. FFXnow

๐Ÿš“ Safety & Weirdness
  • Katelin Akens's former stepfather wants his sexual abuse trial moved out of Spotsylvania. James Branton, 46, argues the jury pool is "poisoned" and asks the judge to bar mention that Akens has been missing since 2015. He goes on trial in December on charges tied to alleged abuse from 2006 to 2011. WTOP

  • A cybersecurity incident knocked Giant Food and Food Lion websites and apps offline. Parent company Ahold Delhaize took systems offline as a precaution; stores stayed open. The outage hit as European authorities investigated supermarket cyberattacks, including one that spiked French store refrigeration to 122 degrees. WTOP

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Money, Jobs & Development
  • Maryland's Glenwood's picked McLean for its first Virginia location. The upscale sushi-and-steak spot signed a roughly 7,000-square-foot lease at Chesterbrook Shopping Center. It was known as Stanford Grill before a 2024 rebrand. FFXnow

  • Loudoun's second Barnes & Noble is under construction at Dulles Landing. The roughly 23,000-square-foot store took over the old BuyBuy Baby space near the Walmart and Dick's. The bookseller is targeting a December opening for the holiday shopping season. The Burn

  • Pasta di Guy hung its sign in Ashburn Village as an opening nears. The Italian spot took the corner once home to Carnegie NY Style Pizza and offers both curated and build-your-own pasta dishes. The team is aiming for a November opening. The Burn

  • FCPS bought a quantum computer for Skyview High, billed as the first for K-12 students. The $684,000 machine, roughly the size of a small refrigerator, installs in December and reaches students next spring. The school board approved it 10-2, with two members citing financial concerns. FFXnow

โšก Quick Hits
  • Arlington Restaurant Week runs through Monday, Oct. 19, with deals at more than 70 spots. ARLnow
  • Halloween falls on a Saturday this year; Arlington trick-or-treaters usually start around 6 p.m. and wrap by 8. ARLnow
  • Giant Food is rolling out in-store Savings Stations near entrances at all 162 stores. Secret DC
  • A historian told the Arlington Historical Society that Rosslyn's "Dead Man's Hollow" earned its name from Potomac bodies washing ashore, not murders. ARLnow
๐Ÿงญ Regional Mood

The grocery app goes dark, the AG opens a voter-fraud hotline, the sushi chain opens in McLean: NoVA spends the week quietly checking whether the systems it relies on still work. Mostly they do, which is its own kind of news.

That's the briefing. Look out for each other out there. See you tomorrow.
