What Northern Virginia is talking about before 9am
๐Ÿš“ Safety & Weirdness
  • A Fairfax woman died after being struck by multiple cars on Route 28 in Chantilly, and police still haven't found the first driver. Fiona Hagengimana, 32, was walking in the northbound lanes near Route 50 around 11 p.m. on Sept. 29 when she was hit. Though at least two drivers stayed, the initial striking vehicle left the scene, and detectives are weighing whether alcohol played a role. FFXnow

  • A 16-year-old turned himself in over a shooting at Mount Vernon Plaza that sent two men to the hospital. The teen faces a charge of willfully discharging a firearm in a public place after the Sept. 29 incident in Hybla Valley. Police say the teen knew both victims, and the three were arguing when the shooting started. FFXnow

  • Vandals hit Wakefield High School ahead of Friday's homecoming game. Someone spray-painted a sidewalk, rock and sign overnight, and ARLnow spotted toilet paper coming out of a tree. Arlington Public Schools called the damage extensive and costly, and required visiting Washington-Liberty students to bring a parent to the game. ARLnow

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Money, Jobs & Development
  • Voodoo Brewing Co. has an opening date in Herndon: Saturday, Oct. 24. The brew pub lands at 2315 Dulles Station Boulevard in the Makers Rise development, its first Northern Virginia location. Expect a full food menu, a full bar, and pinball machines. The Burn

  • Tupelo Honey closed in Rosslyn after 11 years. The Southern-style spot at 1616 N. Troy Street shut its doors Monday when its lease expired. It was the only Tupelo Honey in the D.C. area; the nearest locations now sit in Virginia Beach and Pittsburgh. ARLnow

  • Mr. Wish's Herndon Centre boba shop closed for good, and a new sweet spot is moving in. The owners sold the Elden Street plaza location after three years. A sign teases an incoming frozen dessert shop with froyo and boba, no name or opening date yet. The Burn

  • Chef Seng Luangrath opened Khao Nom, a Lao takeout window in Arlington Ridge. The pop-up from the Padaek owner serves snacks, sandwiches and rice bowls on weekends, with prices from $5.99 to $12.99. Rising food costs pushed her toward the affordable concept; a grand opening is set for this weekend. Arlington Magazine

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Policy & Power
  • Stormwater work is coming to Conklin Community Park in South Riding, and the mountain bike trail will close. The projects include a pond retrofit, a constructed wetland and restoration of 2,200 feet of eroded stream feeding Elk Lick Run. Construction starts in early November and runs through summer 2028; sports courts and restrooms stay open. Loudoun County

  • Fairfax County is still giving away free trees, now to residents countywide. The Urban and Community Forestry Division revived the Arbor Day Foundation program in August and opened the remaining stock to anyone in the county. Residents enter a planting address online and can have a native tree delivered to the door while supplies last. FFXnow

โšก Quick Hits
  • Mount Zion Baptist Church in Green Valley marked its 160th anniversary, and the County Board saluted it Sept. 22. The congregation traces its roots to the Old Bell Church in Freedman's Village. ARLnow
  • Natty, the Washington Nationals' official dog, attended Canine Companions' DogFest at Reston Town Center on Saturday. FFXnow
  • Dave & Buster's is running a family Boo Bash and an adults-only Moonlight Mixer on Oct. 31, with tickets starting at $14.99. Secret DC
๐Ÿงญ Regional Mood

The closings and openings keep swapping places this week; a boba shop out, a Lao window in, a brewery circling an opening date. Underneath it, the hard news is a woman walking Route 28 at night and a sidewalk nobody should have struck.

That's the briefing. Look out for each other out there. See you tomorrow.
