Variants, Vaccines, and Borders

Subscriber Solidarity is our strongest tool right now, on this fascist little island filled with transphobia and xenophobia, as the government is enacting destructive and violent repression of migration, of self affirmation, of any form of protest - with the aid of complicit media and arts establishments. We are not alone, though it may feel like that sometimes, especially in these most uncertain of years.

As news of a new Covid-19 variant reaches all of us, please remember that people should come first - not profit, not policy, not politics. Already displays of racism and colonialism are being made in how the virus is being reported, and in how Western governments are responding to it. Vaccines and treatments are a public good, but you wouldn't know that from current patent regulation and other profiteering collaborations between states and the pharmaceutical industry. A petition calling European countries, companies, and governments to put people before profit can be found here. This month also brings some more radical local happenings. Our pals at the Norwich Arts Centre will be hosting The Neutrinos for an afternoon of music on 11th December, following the band's unique installation at COP26 last month. Look out for exclusive NR coverage coming soon!

Also in the area is Robin Good: The Politico-Panto, by James McDermott, taking place at the Norwich Theatre Playhouse from 8th to 19th December. Only one person can stop the dastardly Sheriff of Norwich in this queered retelling of the old steal-from-the-rich story: Robin Good, a vegan, queer, socialist influencer! We will be dropping by for press night next week - expect our report back shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, in the whacky world of higher education, join us in a show of solidarity to the UCU strikers across the country. Even though UEA UCU did not vote to take strike action, membership collaboration and support was felt and needed in the face of antagonistic media coverage and management practices.
We hope you are staying as healthy as you can, that you have a good support system around you, and that you are making those community ties as strong as possible. It is clear that top-down systems are failing everywhere, and as nights get colder, and countries become smaller, we can still help each other and make our communities better.

Have a safe winter holiday,
