Ukraine is not the only conflict

Subscriber Our readers may have noticed our lack of coverage on our site of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Norwich Radical is not a news organisation. We offer analysis of political events and movements, not live coverage. Moreover, none of our current volunteers and contributors have particular connections to or experience of the situation in Ukraine.

While we do not expect to be publishing a great deal of original material about the invasion, you will see The Norwich Radical sharing analysis from others with direct experience of the situation. At this stage we would like to echo the words of others in the independent media in pointing out the hypocrisy and double standards of Western media and governments, including the UK. There is still a shocking lack of coverage of and sympathy towards similar conflicts in the region, and indeed elsewhere - such as the recent US attack on Somalia, the events taking place in Yemen, and the ongoing Israeli oppression of Palestinians. There has also been a broad failure to recognise the ways in which different marginalised groups, such as people of colour and LGBT+ people, are disproportionately impacted by this kind of conflict.

We stand in full solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and the people of Russia, who categorically refuse this senseless war. We also recommend that you seek out reporting that offers different perspectives than the 'NATO to the rescue' line being toed by so much of Western media. While much is being said of the authoritarian regime in Russia, the UK government continues to enact its own brand of fascism through a swathe of draconian legislation. Priti Patel's proposed Nationality and Borders Bill is one of the more blatant attempted power grabs of recent years - quite an achievement given the Johnson government's track record.

As the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants put it, "the Home Secretary is writing herself a blank cheque" - which she will use to create what the UN's Refugee Agency has called "an asylum model that undermines established international refugee protection rules". The hypocrisy of this governmental attitude to migration has been highlighted in relation to the conflict in Ukraine this week; unfortunately, as we have seen time and again since the 2019 election and the start of the pandemic, Johnson et al won't let any amount of bad publicity derail their corrupt and incoherent agenda. That said, diverse, independent and anti-hegemonic media outlets are a crucial part of the struggle against war and fascism everywhere. As part of the Independent Media Association, we are proud to work alongside some of the leading groups in UK independent media.

Words have power. If you are able to support us or any independent outlets financially, you help us to change the world, one word at a time.

If you're interested in supporting us, see the details on our Steady page here. Whether you live near to or far from one of the world's many active warzones, whether your government practices authoritarianism openly or preaches in the doublespeak of neoliberalism, we hope you are able to stay safe, stay educated, and do what you can to help those around you.

In solidarity,
