Time to educate and grow

Related to the UK and COVID19 specifically, including all the tabloid coverage and cover-ups that the government, politicians, and general mainstream media (BBC included) have been offering on Dominic Cummings and the Johnson government - we are choosing rather to maintain our focus on the health crisis itself, and its ramifications on wider UK society and its more vulnerable communities.
If you are inclined to listen to the government's advice on the pandemic, rather than actual medical, scientific guidelines, we urge you to err on the side of caution: wear masks, respect distances between people, avoid large crowds where possible, support people working in vulnerable conditions, wash your hands regularly, and remember that - at this stage, repeatedly - the government has shown that they do not care about any of us.

As for the news currently dominating the front pages globally: will not be sharing images of the police violence and brutality (in the US, just as in Canada and in the UK) - we have a very carefully thought out publication policy against showing violence and oppression, especially when trauma is used to show to members not of the oppressed community 'just how bad it is' - and we will be broadcasting and highlighting voices directly affected by all that is happening, fully aware of our privilege as a predominantly white-run publication.
As such, a reminder that the Black Lives Matter-led protests - among the new rumours of external interference - are supported by the vast majority of business owners and local neighbours in the affected areas. And an even louder reminder of what we should be doing is divesting and deprogramming ourselves from policing: policing tone, policing reactions, and policing as an institution. Verso Books have a currently free eBook on this topic here.

This is the time to learn, to educate ourselves, to re-learn how to read and how to work as a society, as a community, as an intersection of differences that must not be erased but rather valued because of those differences.
One last note: If you can donate to funds supporting liberation struggles, especially young, POC, queer, disabled, do so; if you cannot, use your platform to boost and broadcast those voices. Stay safe, and ensure that others are safe too.
