The Art of Resistance

Subscriber We have some more radical local happenings to point you towards this month, starting with a protest coming up this Thursday. Following a series of high-publicity spikings in the UK, large demonstrations and boycotts of nightclubs have been taking place in Manchester and elsewhere to demand change. A Norwich Stop The Spiking picket will be taking place on Prince of Wales Rd from 10pm on Thursday (4th).

In the words of the organisers, "Enough is Enough! Violence against women and LGBTQ+ people is endemic in our city and our country, we demand change and action against the spiking and continued attacks on our community." If you are able to, we would encourage you to join in with this crucial action and help make the voices of women and LGBTQ+ people heard. The 11th of November marks the start of the 2021 Disability History Month Festival, which local artist and friend of the Radical Vince Laws will be contributing to. His new exhibition 'Painting Myself Happy' will be launching as part of the opening event of the festival, which will be taking place entirely online, with BSL interpretation and live captions for every event. Check out the full festival program here. Beyond Norwich, two of the more damaging trends in modern media and politics have continued to make themselves known these past weeks. A recent article by the BBC on trans women, which breaches several of the Corporation's own reporting standards, has highlighted just how endemic transphobia is in mainstream media at present. An open letter calling out the many flaws and failings of the article was sent to the BBC this week - you can read the letter and see some advice on submitting complaints to the BBC here. Meanwhile, at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, world leaders are continuing to show their inability to grasp the fundamental issues of inequality that are intrinsic to the climate crisis, dining out in high prestige while their continued failure to act causes widespread suffering. The Johnson can make his fine speeches, but it is only days since his chancellor's budget revealed just how short the Tories are happy to sell their climate commitments.

In short, this is a month of reminders that radical change will not come from the establishment, but from the protestors and artists working together in their communities. We urge you to participate in this work as much as you are able this month, and wish you well as the nights draw in here in the global North.

In solidarity,
