Striking Developments

Subscriber Our new government may have lasted more than a month, but it is no less xenophobic and profiteering than the last regime. The recent failures of Tory economic policy have made plain the damage a decade of that policy has ensured: when the going gets tough, there is little help for ordinary folk. This will be a colder and hungrier winter for many.

It's no surprise then that a multitude of strike actions have continued to shake the foundations of many key industries: railway workers, postal workers, education workers and nursing staff are all taking to the picket lines. CEOs like Simon Thompson of Royal Mail/International Distributions Services plc - not a national public service, but a private company, since 2015 - are ready to mistify, obfuscate, and flat out lie about the reality of these strikes, attempting to sway the public against a struggle for fair working conditions for all workers and employees. Looking further afield, this month we published a new international look at the recent election in Israel. Benjamin Netanyahu has returned to power, despite bribery and fraud charges. Though "currently still in talks with three other extreme right parties to form his coalition government, an extremely concerning development has already occurred with the appointment of Ben Gvir to the position of National Security Minister." Sarah Edgcumbe writes more about it, and how this is a catastrophic blow to Palestinians, left-leaning Israelis, and human rights activists everywhere. In more Arts-based news, we also have a new interview from Carmina Masoliver: a conversation with Hannah Jane Walker on Highly Sensitive People and politics of feeling (and the difference between writing and performance). You can read the whole piece here!

The winter holidays can be a hard time for many. We hope you are as safe and warm as you can be this month.

Rest if you can, recharge if you are able. There is much work to be done, and everyone's contribution is valuable, no matter how small.
Seasonal solidarity,
