One eye on the future, one on the past

Subscriber This month we bid a fond goodbye to Callum Luckett, our Community Section Editor. Callum is moving into a career in education, and we have no doubt he will be as inspiring a figure for the young radicals in his tutelage as he has been to work with on the editorial team.

If you've not yet read the excellent long-read on the aftermath of Euro 2020 he wrote for us in July, it is definitely worth a few minutes of your time. Callum has a real talent for synthesising nuanced and complex community dynamics, as well as his own experience, into clear and powerful analysis. We will miss him, and we wish him all the best! In other Radical news, we will be opening recruitment for writers in our Community, Inter|National, Perspectives and Student sections this coming Monday, the 13th. Keep an eye on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds for the full details, and please do pass them on to anyone you think might be interested in contributing to our little corner of the discourse! As the current events in Afghanistan continue to unfold, we have been reminded again and again of the brutal consequences of 21st century Western imperialism and interventionism. As we published an excellent new work of visual art on the topic from Arun Kumar, two pieces from the Radical archive came to mind: Did Blair Have A Hero Complex? by Natasha Senior, from 2016, and Problematic "Peacebuilding": When The Powerful Don't Ask And Won't Listen by Sarah Edgcumbe, from 2019.

While much of the media focus only on the details of the present, these two pieces provide some much-needed analysis of the US and UK foreign policy decisions (read: warmongering) that have lead to so much crisis and pain in the subsequent years.

All of which is to say, we hope you are able to stay safe and well this month, wherever you are in the world, and we implore you to remind those who seem to have forgotten that Tony Blair remains a war criminal.

In Solidarity,
The Norwich Radical Editorial Team
