Going Forward

Firstly we'd like to send our solidarity to those who have spent the last four weeks participating in the UCU strikes to defend pensions - be it out on the picket line in the snow, or supporting lecturers in other ways.
Over on the Radical we've shone a light where we can. Over 200 students signed an Open Letter to University of East Anglia's Vice Chancellor David Richardson in support of their teaching staff. Ana Oppenheim, NUS International Students' Campaign, penned a guide to the UCU Strike for International students, and Alex Powell wrote about why he as a Graduate Teaching Fellow was joining the strike. When Jon McGregor, author of Costa Book Award winning Reservoir 13, announced that he would not be taking part in UEA's Spring Literary Festival, he did so in solidarity with the UCU strike - he took part instead for the Alternative University being organised by striking staff and hosted by the Students’ Union.
Whilst for many the strike action ended Friday 16th March, members at the following branches will be taking action on 19th and 20th March. We stand in solidarity.
And on the topic of solidarity - a month ago, many of you came together once again in Norwich to discuss the future of the media. With over a dozen different sessions and more than 30 speakers at War of Words, we debated how we can build a more progressive media.
Thank you to everyone who donated to our crowdfunder, to everyone who shared the event on social media, to everyone who attended the conference and who spoke on a panel or ran a workshop or listened in the audience. Without all of you, the event couldn't have happened, and we couldn't have made that start on re-imagining what our media could look like. Take a peek at the event here, and keep an eye out for a full showcase later on.
Off the back of the incredible success of War of Words 2018, we're driving forward our intention to play a part in building that progressive media future. Right now we're looking to recruit for a new Inter|National Editor to join our team. Anyone can apply! You do not need to be based in the UK, and English does not need to be your first language. Check out our vacancy now, and spread the word.
In solidarity,
Cadi & Alex,
Co-Editors, The Norwich Radical
