Changes Ahead

Subscriber Welcome back to your monthly update on all things Norwich Radical and beyond.

It has been a harrowing month across the board, with the string of surfacing harassment and assaults from powerful men in media, entertainment, politics around the world seemingly unending - though there is hope in the bleakness, as survivors and witnesses are finding their voices, and we may finally be at a turning point in how we believe and listen to those voices.

As the results of recent studies show a severe drop in the freedom of press and increased dangers to journalists, we keep striving towards a public, honest, open media that challenges the powers that would silence it. The work of outlets like The Norwich Radical, and any other alternative news source, is becoming more and more crucial - we broke news of UEA's divestment from fossil fuel industries - the culmination of several years of student campaigning, and one of the highlights of our month.

To add to the celebrations, we're delighted to welcome Scott Mclaughlan as an Inter|national writer, which wraps up our recruitment for that section. Originally hailing from Thurston, the jewel in the crown of Suffolk, Scott writes on postcolonial international relations, the historical development of the far right and Marxist theory. With many moves in between, he is now based in north London and is a PhD candidate at Birkbeck, University of London. Check out his work for us so far here.

We have also received and are currently confirming the addition of new writers in our Perspectives section, so keep your eyes out for some new insight into areas we may not have already explored, and new voices being shared on our platform.

In light of the continuation of our work, we are also organising the third edition of War of Words, the Progressive Media Conference!  The event will take place in Norwich yet again, on 10th February 2018, in the Student Union of UEA. We are still at the planning stage for several key features of the event, but we are asking for any contribution towards our fundraising efforts, to ensure the best free delivery of one of our crowning achievements as a publication. You can see a video highlighting our 2017 event below.

In closing, Europe seems to be finally hit by winter after all, and that includes some of the harshest conditions for vulnerable people - be it financially, health-wise (physical and mental), or any other means. Please make sure to take care of yourselves, and lend a hand to others who cannot.

In solidarity,

Cadi & Alex,
Co-Editors, The Norwich Radical
