Beyond the Tab - Events & Recruitment

Subscriber Welcome to the latest edition of the Norwich Radical newsletter - a lot is afoot. We have events, new writers, more vacancies, the lot...

Firstly, for those of you in the East of England, we're excited to plug an event we're hosting - Beyond the Tab: Exploring the Radical Frontier of Student Media.

Students have been finding unique ways to get their voices heard for a long time. Various forms of student-run media have often been integral to the success of students’ political and activist projects. And much as student media may seem to be moving towards tabloid-style journalism these days, there is still plenty of radical work being done in the field if you know where to look.

Join us for a panel discussion aiming to provide an insight into a few of the more exciting and progressive student media projects around at the moment, including:
  • London Student, the capital’s eminent student-run media co-operative of investigative journalists par excellence.
  • EggBox Publishing, UEA’s own indie press who publish everything from Anthologies to Zines.
  • Storehouse Magazine, the fantastic mag from Norwich University of the Arts SU that explores the minds and work of NUA students.
  • And, of course, The Norwich Radical’s own Student Section, with its 3 year track record of delivering the alternative take on all things Higher Ed.
The panel will take place upstairs in Union House, in Room 6, on November 13th at 1930hrs. Come find out about the side of young media that cares about more than just those 27 mad things only UK noughties kids will understand.

In other news that we're excited to shout about ... our team has expanded once more! After a particularly strong selection of applicants for our International Section, and we're delighted to welcome the following to our team:

Justin Reynolds
Justin is a writer and designer working in Norwich. He writes about politics, economics, technology and culture and the intersections between them. When not doing so he might be found participating in political campaigning, dabbling with electronic music or walking along his much loved East Anglian coastline. Area: Middle East, South & East Asia.

Stu Lucy

A somewhat experienced and slightly jaded development practitioner taking some time out to study Social and Political Thought at Warwick University. Keen interest in politics and international affairs as well as rock climbing and cheese. Area: Africa.

Maud Webster
Maud Webster is a sixth former in Norwich, obsessed with Orwell’s essays, fruit and hiking. As well as taking a key interest in global and scientific affairs, she is often spotted running around busy with new projects and has an odd affinity for paperwork. Area: Oceania.

Yali Banton Heath
Since graduating in International Development from UEA, Yali has tried to escape the reality of becoming a graduate by temporarily going to Spain. Her journalistic interests lie in Southeast Asia, human agency, and the flaws of modern development (a cynic in critic’s clothing). Yali loves vegetables, plant power, films, dancing, going with the flow, spending as much time in nature as possible, and generally having a laugh. Area: South & East Asia.

Richard McNeil-Willson
Richard McNeil-Willson is a UK Research Council PhD researcher at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, and visiting researcher at Scuola Normale Superiore, Firenze and the University of Aarhus. He specialises in social movements, counter-terror legislation and Middle Eastern politics. Richard spent much of his youth in the deep rural heart of Norfolk. Area: Europe, and The Middle East.

As if that wasn't enough excitement, we're looking to expand our team again and have vacancies in our Perspectives Section! We're looking for writers who can contribute articles that highlight issues of inequality, disparity and discrimination, and who can offer new and radical narratives. Check out the full vacancy brief here! If writing for us is something you've been interested in, and you're keen to join our team, drop us an application by midnight Saturday November 10th.

And on a final note, we'd like to thank some incredible writers who have left the team this month - Olivia Hanks and Richard Worth. We wish them all the best with their next endeavours, and look forward to working with them again in the future!
