A striking month

Subscriber The past month has seen even more collective action, with several unions casting ballot votes for strikes, protests, and demonstrations across a number of services, including Amazon, London transport, railway workers, dockworkers, and BT workers.

Which of course means that current Labour leader Keir Starmer has shown his true colours (some shade of blue, it seems), attempting to ban Labour MPs from joining picket lines, condemning those who already had, and even sacking shadow transport minister Sam Tarry after he attended an RMT picket.

As co-editor Rowan Gavin wrote in a recent piece: "This is the vision of governmental alternative we are presented with: competent, civil authoritarianism rather than the offensively incompetent pseudo-fascism of Johnson. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, we are told, but while Starmer’s Labour still wears the rose, the vapid husk of an opposition they have become has no fragrance at all." In better, more celebratory news: the England team won the Women's European Football Championship, beating Germany 2-1! And while you may not be invested in football, the result was a great moment for a number of reasons: exemplary sportsmanship (no, the irony is not lost on us), a great message to younger players of all genders, and an actual reason to celebrate something associated with Britain for once.

The role of the gender binary in sport continues to be a sticking point for some, with this tournament bringing vocal transphobes out of the woodwork yet again. While many sporting associations continue to perpetuate harmful and arbitrary controls around who gets to play on which team, in June the German Football Association (DFB) granted trans and non-binary players the freedom to choose whether they play for men's or women's teams.
"The regulation sets out that players with the gender status of ‘diverse’ or ‘not specified,’ or players who have had their gender reassigned, can decide for themselves in the future whether they should be granted the right to play for a women’s or men’s team. This also applies to transgender players, who can now switch teams at their own discretion, or remain in the team in which they currently play for. As long as the player’s health is not affected by playing sports while taking medication, they can continue to participate in the sport. Under the new regulation, this would not be considered as doping."
We wondered last month whether Norwich Pride would be following the example of many a similar celebration and demonstration of the radical nature of queer liberation - and we were pleasantly surprised! A great turn-out, politically active, with only minor rainbow-washed right-winging.

Now all that is left is to remove the corporate and cop presence entirely, restoring the grassroots, radical, outrageous nature of the event...
