What's in a beach read? ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ–

As a trans nonbinary person, I never let myself think of a future. But on my 34th birthday, I felt this sudden sense of urgency. For the first time, I could conceive of a futureโ€”not just my own, but our collective trans futures. I wanted to manifest the queer and gender euphoria I wanted to see in the world, and I wasnโ€™t going to wait for grants or a brick-and-mortar store. So I started one book at a time.

Over the course of nine months, The Nonbinarian Book Bike has evolved into a truly collaborative effort through countless time, labor, love, and support. Together, we built a foundation. Together, we funded the bike and sourced our initial inventory. And now youโ€™re here with us to envision that futureโ€”together.

Once a month, weโ€™ll share where the Book Bike is headed, what cool shit weโ€™re cooking up, and how you can get involved.

Weโ€™ve only just begun, baby. Welcome to The Nonbinarian Community.

Summer Reading Is for the Queers

Raise your hand if you participated in summer reading challenges as a kid. โœ‹ Now raise your hand if you wish you could reclaim the nostalgia of visiting the library with a stack of books each week, trading in the ones you'd already devoured for a fresh batch of stories awaiting your voracious appetite. ๐Ÿ™Œ

As a 33-year-old lesbian whose book cravings change as consistently as their food cravings, I often think about how much I loved partaking in reading challenges and reading groups as a kid, as well as how quickly those fell by the wayside as I got older and started to figure out who I was. It wasn't for lack of tryingโ€”simply put, very few of my peers read as often or as eagerly as me. After a while, I decided to reserve my excitement about books for my closest friends and my partners but now, there seems to be a resurgence in book clubs and reading challenges, and I have to say that I am 100 percent here for it. This summer alone, I'm participating in two reading challenges (one from Bookshop.Org and Libro.fm and another from content creators CouplaGoofs). I'm also coordinating The Nonbinarian Book Club (!) and resurrecting a queer and trans book club for another online community. I'm reading more than I have in some timeโ€”both for work and for funโ€”and I'm having a blast expanding my TBR, diving headfirst into bookish conversations, and generally sharing my love of reading with other queer folks.

Summer reading feels different as an out, queer adult who's also disabled and chronically ill. As much as I love going outside, the extreme heat in my part of the US coupled with my body's inability to cope makes it harder than ever to leave our cozy home on days when the thermometer climbs past 80ยฐF before noon. It's so freeing to pick up whatever book I want, whenever I want, and put it down or drag it out or swallow it whole in a single night, then talk about it without fear of being reprimanded or interrogated about the stories I love (or the stories I hate). The nostalgia is there, certainly, but so is an intense feeling of belonging and caring. I've never been so thrilled to read on a deadline in my life, and I am so excited to see how my relationship with books continues to evolve as these bookish communities grow together.
