Protect Queer & Trans Books
When The Nonbinarian Book Bike was founded in 2022, our mission was simple — to provide access to & promote representation of queer stories for all ages by directly bringing LGBTQIA2S+ books to the folks that need them most.
Fast forward to 2026, in which Congressional Republicans have introduced a nationwide bill banning LGBTQ books. House Resolution 7661 (H.R. 7661), also known as the “Stop the Sexualization of Children Act,” is a deeply anti-trans bill, in which the literal topic of existing as transgender would qualify as “sexually oriented material” & be subject to removal.
“These bills aren’t about removing books; books are just one of the tools. These bills are about the complete & total erasure & removal of queer people from American life.” — Kelly Jensen, Book Riot
This new bill is simultaneous to the 740 bills currently under consideration across the country that would negatively impact trans and gender non-conforming people. Only three months into the year, this number is expected to grow.
With the emotional whiplash of constant anti-trans news, amidst many other horrors currently at play from this administration’s fascist regime, it can be hard to know where to focus your attention & that’s exactly what they want — to overwhelm us into inaction. To which I can only say — start small. Start by listening, to trans people you know & trans activists online. Start at home, having conversations with family & neighbors. Start local, connecting with grassroots orgs. Start by making your voice heard & call your representatives so we can knock down legislation like this & more that will surely follow.
With the Trans Rights Readathon leading up to Trans Day of Visibility, this is the perfect opportunity to start small: with your bookshelf. Purchasing books in-store keeps your local trans-owned indie, The Nonbinarian Bookstore open. We invite you to help us in protecting the queer & trans futures we want to see in this world through literature, community, & resistance.
In solidarity,
The Nonbinarian

Trans Rights Readathon
March 17 - March 31, 2026
The Trans Rights Readathon is an annual call to action to readers and book lovers in support of Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV) on March 31st.
How it works: During the two weeks of the readathon (March 17-31), read trans* books and donate to trans* organizations. This is a decentralized fundraiser, so how you participate is up to you. You can read 1 book or 20 books. You can donate to a large organization or a mutual aid group (like us!)
Call to action: Read, support, review, & uplift books written by and/or featuring trans, genderqueer, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming, & 2Spirit authors & characters. The Nonbinarian made a list of 100 recommendations just for you!
Donate: Participants are invited to fundraise for trans aid organizations in their communities, such as your friendly neighborhood Nonbinarian Bookstore
