Liner Notes: Led Zeppelin IV
Black Dog. Let’s go. Let’s put German Shepards on the backs of motorcycles and give them cigars to smoke as they make their way down the highway. Let’s run uphill on the dunes of a beach while wearing construction boots. Let’s line up a pool shot across space and time and dimensions that have yet to be discovered and feel the satisfaction when one shot leads to the next and the next.
Rock and Roll. A John Bonham show-off song that isn’t necessarily a show-off song. What do I mean by that? Watch how Questlove takes the audience clapping here during the breakdown of a D’Angelo song and how he uses the clapping as a way to show that the beat never left the song. Take that sense of — ‘Here’s where the beat is’ and listen again to John Bonham drive his way through the song like a drag racer — and how he almost retroactively turns Plant’s voice into a co-equal driving force with the two pauses he throws into the mix. It’s not a hair-metal band drum solo of a song, but the song wouldn’t be the same without Bonham.
The Battle Of Evermore. A nice page on the internal linguistic consistency of Lord of the Rings.
