Speed Mission!

by Jason

Nothing I write today is permanent.

I was really inspired by the Friendly Skeleton post that detailed their mission statement and the journey to get there. It prompted me to reflect on what I envision The Misplay to become.

First and foremost, we are two things: (1) a podcast and (2) a board game design company. This dual identity is integral to our story, and we can never overlook it. We want to build a board game, and we want to share the crooked, winding, sometimes dead-end path we take to build it.

As a podcast, we aim to be transparent. I’ve mentioned on the show a few times, “I don’t know if we should be telling people this,” especially when it comes to things we said we would do but haven’t done yet. Our goal is for the podcast to reflect the energy we’re putting into The Misplay as we document our story building a game. While we can’t capture every step in a 30-minute bi-weekly podcast, we will do our best to highlight the critical discussions, learnings, and outcomes.

As a board game design company, Mark and I might have different visions or haven't fully collaborated on that yet. As individuals, we strive to be kind, considerate, and thoughtful. As designers, our simple goal is to be recognized as "board game designers." It’s an ambitious goal, but we're not trying to be anything more. Right now, we’re just searching dark rooms with flashlights.

Words that resonate with me: Story, Learning, Transparent, Thoughtful, Kind.

Our mission is to create a thoughtful and engaging podcast that fosters learning through storytelling and the development of board games. We strive to inspire kindness and creativity in every step of our journey.

Good starting point, I think.

Wake Me Up When September Ends

by Mark

Once upon a time, there were whispers in Discord about a fabled podcast we used to create. During some of our early planning, before we ever sat down to record Misplay 2.0 or “Season 2,” Jason took a firm stance that this iteration of the show would be a complete relaunch. We took down all the old episodes and started fresh. However, even in the first episode, we couldn’t entirely separate The Misplay of the past from The Misplay of the present. Jason alluded to the old show in the first episode of the relaunch, saying something like, “This isn’t our first rodeo...” Some of our dynamic and even some of the bits we use on the current show are artifacts from the previous version. The previous show’s influence was so strong that someone in Discord even asked about “the old show” with genuine interest.

This week, I did the edit for the show. Jason used a different clip from our recording session than the one I chose when I edited. I was pleasantly surprised, if not touched, that Jason changed to a cold open that served as an homage to the Eternal version of the show.
