Can I Expense Games?
by Mark
This June we really tried putting our noses to the grindstone with design work, playtesting, revising, and sharing what we’ve learned and continue to work on with "Starcrossed Realms." We’re moving into a bit of a holding pattern as summer scheduling and available time to work and plan varies wildly from week to week. We also have other topics and aspects of the project that we want to document, share, and explore.
Peter is an idea machine and has cranked out revisions, different builds, updated card files, our new change log, and other additions and contributions to the "Starcrossed Realm" files I’m sure I’ve forgotten. Jason’s done a lot of heavy lifting on the podcast editing and some more of his favorite business related aspects of the wider Misplay project. I’ve gotten to do all the things I continue to enjoy about the project: working on game design, playtesting, and of course writing and recording shows.
The next set of shows will cover new angles and activities while we continue work on Starcrossed Realms in the background and explore other possible game ideas. With GenCon on the horizon we’ll also be playing a bunch of new games. We are trying to double down on our commitment to playing more games as research to hone our eye for game design and hopefully find some cool new games to play. Someone please remind me to ask Jason if I can buy a bunch of games on my wishlist and expense them to The Misplay.
The summer months are meant to be a breather for teachers to rest, relax, and refresh. We’ve decided to "Gunnit", grind, and game hard instead.

We are incredibly grateful to have not only Patrons but sponsors as well. If you listened to the first episode, you know I had the idea to gamify the sponsor section. Whether or not that's a good idea remains to be seen.
Recently, we reached a point where the CPM (cost per thousand listeners) was no longer favorable for sponsors. A single 60-second ad on our show for $1 is great. However, a single 60-second ad for $10 is not. A 60-second second ad on "This American Life" for $10 is an amazing deal!
To find the right balance, we decided to reset the ad cost back to $1 after an ad has run three consecutive times. Our thinking is that if we're not attracting new sponsors, it might be because the CPM isn't correctly valued.
We would love to hear your feedback!
