The Magpie #023: Dan Dare lives

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Magpie, a wire service for the weird compiled from the open tabs of writer Alex de Campi. Here’s what’s going on:

Hi everyone, long time no talk, this is just a real swift message (from JFK airport departures!) to say that the Kickstarter for my Dan Dare graphic novel has just launched and there is an early-bird discount if you pledge in the first 48 hours.

The art (by Marc Laming and Michael Woods) is fantastic and this is me doing big spectacular space opera emotion and action—but in a really hopeful way. Think James Gunn’s Superman. Yes parts of the book are terrifying but also parts are very funny, and there are lots of great spaceships.

It’s also Chapter One, bro. You don’t need to know a damn thing about Dan Dare to enjoy the book fully. (But if you do grow up reading the Eagle, you’ll see how much we love Hampson and Bellamy too—there’s lots familiar.)

Here’a a little preview:

Here’s that Kickstarter link again. Tell a friend! And thank you.

For all of you waiting on news about The Scottish Boy, we’re near final contracts for both the print and eBook/Kindle editions and as soon as the ink is dry I’ll let you know! I’m hoping to work with queer bookstores in the US, UK, and Australia to do discounted and/or signed editions to reward all of your patience.

More soon.
