Say The First Thing That Comes To Your Head
I adore improv.
I do it regularly. I don’t have ComedySportz type levels of shows (seriously, some folks could do 30 shows in a month, they get their reps in). But I do at least one show a month and I’ve been teaching regularly for the past two years.
But I always find it difficult to say the first thing to get someone to come see my stuff. To come take a class with me. I always want to say the right thing to convince them that, no, it’s not like that one episode of The Office. The greatest compliment I ever got was from a former girlfriend who said, “You’re actually funny!,” to which I honestly replied, “I know, right?”
And yet. I am literally teaching a class right now about getting improvisers to literally just do the next thing. Say the first thing to come to your mind. Just get started. If you can’t say anything, then you’re not doing what you want to do.
So here I am, saying the first thing coming to my head. Let go of your own self-judgment and challenge yourself next time to just say something.
My Wonderful Media
MOVIE: Captain America: Brave New World

Imagine a flavorless pudding without texture. You’re still having pudding. So you might enjoy the sense memory that you’re having pudding. But everything you enjoy about the pudding feels hollow.
That’s Captain America: Brave New World.
TV: Jessica Jones Season 1

We really didn’t know how good we had it with Marvel TV shows. The characterization in this first season of Jessica Jones is extraordinary. It feels like a TV show instead of one movie stretched to six episodes. And the stakes are incredibly small and incredibly personal.
What I’m Reading: Island Wisdom: Hawaiian Traditions and Practices for a Meaningful Life by Annie Daly and Kainoa Daines

My partner Heidi won a trip to Hawaii. Because of that, I got to have one of, if not THE greatest vacation of my entire life. Most importantly, I somehow enjoyed being outside. Possibly because Hawaii had incredible weather the entire time.
Through winning the trip, she got this breezy book that is a wonderfully substantive look into Hawaiian culture. Suddenly making Texas look a LOT more selfish than it already is :)
Honorable Mention

Big ups to Chris Mead’s Pretend Post, which was a huge inspiration on the formatting of this dang newsletter.
