No. 104 The weekly schedule for The System for Writing Master Course is now available
No. 104 • 12/20/2025
Dear readers,
This guy—me—is a firm believer in not over-planning a months-long course (or even a few weeks-long course). You've gotta keep things loose, so you can accommodate the knowledge base and needs of your students. But, you do have to plan something.
Here's what I do:
For four-week courses I plan out the first two and half weeks, filling in the gaps of the last week and half as they approach. This gives me plenty of time (2.5 weeks) to gauge where students are at, and make changes to the final sessions.
For longer courses, like The System for Writing Master Course, I plan the first six classes, develop rough sketches for the next two, and leave the last class wide open. By class nine, we're so deep in, so well versed in what we're all up to, that this class can be properly tailored to the students.
In light of that, here's where we're at with The System for Writing Master Course:
Module 1: Building Your Zettelkasten
- Week 1: Capturing Ideas
- Week 2: Processing Ideas
- Week 3: Connecting Ideas
- Week 4: Locating Ideas
Module 2: Writing with Your Zettelkasten
- Week 5: Sourcing Ideas for Your Writing
- Week 6: Developing Ideas for Your Writing
- Week 7: Writing Short Works
- Week 8: Writing Longer Works
- Week 9: TBD

Notes on the above
The more I dig into the contents of this course, and the more ideas I pull from my own practices, the more stoked I am to teach this. Which is a lot of stoke, cuz I was already pretty stoked.
What I'm up to
Sat for an interview with Keanu Heydari earlier this week. We got into all things zettelkasten and the anxieties that come with writing. Will let you know when it comes out.
