I’ve been trying to figure out how to be a professional on the internet and not be too obnoxious about all the everything that's been on fire since at least 2014… but it turns out, I just don't think I can do that.
I'm mad. We're all mad. Let's be mad together! We’re all out here white-knuckling our way through this hellscape—climate change, economic collapse, the rise of fascism, AI everything—and I think we've earned ourselves some solidarity, as a treat.
Who am I?
I'm Josh Sutphin, author of horror and hopepunk, co-founder of Shiraki Press, and veteran video game developer. I grew up writing stories, spent 20 years building interactive ones, then watched in horror as the tech industry collapsed under the weight of its own hubris and the rest of the world caught on fire right alongside it. My wife and I left games and founded Shiraki Press—an independent publisher of hopepunk fiction—and now we’re trying to make it work: just another couple of Millenials trying to survive the hellscape.
What to expect
To start, I'm aiming to close out each week with a missive in three parts: a little rant, a little praxis, and a little community. I want to engage with the stuff that’s pissing me off, but I also want to pair it with some kind of hope, optimism, or action that’s oriented toward improving things, and I want to highlight other folks who are also doing the work.
In addition to the weekly missive, I'll likely publish some occasional one-off features, including personal essays and speculative fiction, because sometimes fiction is the only way to get at the heart of a thing.
And then… we'll see where this goes!
