gold!
Hello friend, how are you? Thank you opening! What an EPIC WEEK this has been! You know what they say–you gotta write it down so you won’t forget. :) A bit of this and that in this letter ♥ -K
Forget the meandering and meaningless three-hour speech that we started our Monday with, but yeah, in case you can’t, like professionally, you can always catch up with the transcript or the first-person President’s Final Report to the People.
BTW: SONA Bingo card update:
Walang blackout hahaha.
I’d rather remember two things from this week. The first being, of course:
Hidilyn Diaz’s Olympic gold.
Much has been said about how epic this has been. Occurring the same night as the State of the Nation Address, the feat bumped off the President’s most important annual address off the frontpages–as it rightly should.
To add to Diaz’s stellar performance, the PH delegation to the Tokyo Olympics has been performing really well! With boxer Nesthy Petecio assured of a bronze medal now battling for Gold in her next match!!!, this Olympics stint marks not only the country’s first Olympic gold in 97 years, but the country’s first multi-medal finish in 89 years!!! That’s amazing, honestly.
This will be the first time in 89 years that the Philippines will have multiple medals in a single Olympic Games. Teófilo Yldefonso, Simeon Toribio, and José Villanueva all won bronze medals in 1932. Follow our stories on the #Tokyo2020 Olympics here:

‘#Dapat Si Leni’
Speaking of amazing things: We waited for 3 hours on Monday for the President’s assessment of the country’s COVID response, which he may have mentioned in one way or another some 2 and a half hours in, but without much meaty details. The following morning, the Vice President’s 14-minute speech gave credit where credit is due, re: the country’s COVID response: to ordinary Filipinos and the private sector.
In case you missed it: VP Robredo’s FB live this morning thanked Filipinos for literally carrying this country’s COVID response. It’s only 15 minutes long:

Which is, you know, actually complementary to the President’s SONA messaging, which had nearly nil COVID response assessment… kasi nga naman, wala.

Nagbigay ng Ulat Sa Bayan si VP @lenirobredo earlier. Sabi ng mga taumbayan-funded “social media specialists” eh wala naman daw kuwenta, epal pero nanood pa rin sila. 🤭 Here are the highlights of VP Leni’s 14 mins speech of hope & inclusion: #DapatSiLeni #HusayAtTibay 💪

Recs from around the Internet
This week, on this read was so good I had to create an entire thread of quotes for it:
Some of the people loudly calling for a return to the office are not the same people who will actually be returning to the office regularly, @edzitron writes.

Why People Like Working From Home - The Atlantic
Like it or not, the way we work has already evolved.
My favorite quote off this article spawned an entire long-ass thread:
“Remote work empowers those who produce and disempowers those who have succeeded by being excellent diplomats and poor workers, along with those who have succeeded by always finding someone to blame for their failures.” 🔥
https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1420783443609329665
Necessary caveat though: Remote work also renders a lot of work invisible. As any middle manager who has ever borne the brunt of managing both up and down will tell you, their battlefronts are two-fold:
-
with their superiors, who find themselves more challenged than usual as they lead their remote workforce through the pandemic
-
with the rest of the team, who may or may not be adjusting as well as expected to new requirements and ways of working.
tl;dr Be kind to those who are in between–I think they’re the ones who need the most support!
Anyway! My favorite meme for this week is a masterclass in storytelling hahahaha this reminds me of the quality of conversations I had in college. Enjoy!
Have a golden weekend!
XO,
K
