everything, everywhere, all at once

hello friend, long time no email. it's been a rough month and a half, sort of, between the elections and the inauguration of the President-who-will-not-be-named. in any case, here we are. anyway, requisite warning as this entry may contain SPOILERS for "everything everywhere all at once" which we saw last night. if you're looking to make a comeback at the cinemas, i suppose you should give this movie a chance. hope you find something useful or comforting here. -k

1. everything, everywhere

So yeah, between the last time I was on here and today, a lot has actually happened. Some notes:

  • Girlfriends and I finally went back to the beach, marking a return after two long years of planning. (Corollary: familiar ba kayo sa alamat ng baka at kalabaw haha)

  • To mark this year's PRIDE celeb, I compiled a one-tweet-a-day Pride thread featuring TWICE for the entire month. Because this is our first PRIDE as TWICE stans.

  • This thread is perhaps my last word on relatives who are BBM/Sara supporters lol. Six more years.

2. all at once: a brief note about the movie

When TBA Studios announced they were bringing Everything, Everywhere, All at Once to Philippine cinemas, we knew we had to catch it on the big screen. Thankfully, the Greenbelt cinemas were included in the selection of theaters hosting the release, so we decided to check it out.

It was so worth it. True to the hype, Michelle Yeoh's performance here as Evelyn Wang is nothing short of magnificent. Half the time, I did not really understand what was going on--the best way to get into this movie is to know nothing about its premise nor its physics ahead of time--and yet the core of the story is simple and so true. Indeed: What my brain could not comprehend, my heart could easily understand. I could definitely relate to Evelyn's frantic life, and the attendant meaningless-ness that weighs her down, and I especially loved it that she was so bogged down by TAXES. Something so unnecessarily complex and unpleasant.

I also loved how this movie is an entire meditation on unlived lives and could-have-beens; I guess this is a function of age? Hehe. Plus the connectedness of the characters! What if in all the multiverses, we're really just all bound to meet each other at some point, just in a different setting or situation? All of it is just so interesting to think about. Especially now that we're in the darkest timeline, no? I hope in some universe out there, another version of us are living their lives under a better government. That's all.

3. from around the internet

  • IU's version of Seventeen's "darl+ing" is so adorable like ???
  • This thread on how misinformation spread back in the day, featuring the late comedienne Zorayda and Jean Claude van Damme (yes.)
  • This essay had me thinking: The internet isn't a time, but a place. Charlie Warzel on how the internet became a Doom Loop.
  • This essay had me on the floor because of how much I loved it: Helena Fitzgerald for her newsletter Griefbacon, monsters.
  • This video edit for Pride: Aren't all friendships romantic?
  • aaand my favorite TWICE memes hahaha featuring pacquiao and this one that you just have to play, I guess, because I cannot explain it.

Anyway. That's it for now--I have no words for the "inauguration", just eternal thanks for the outgoing Vice President. See you at Angat Buhay initiatives, if ever? :)

XO,

K
