a little note about 'us'

Manila, 31 March—Marking the end of the first quarter with Jordan Peele’s thriller “Us”, which stars the phenomenal Lupita Nyong’o with Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex and Madison Curry.

This is a spoiler-free write-up.

Oh, wow. I’m not much of a horror fan, but all that (well-deserved) hype pushed me into the movie house for horror films like A Quiet Place and this one. Still, I’m a wuss, so I watched this with my eyes closed half the time, but somewhere along the way I realized that the only way to truly enjoy Lupita’s performance is to watch it with my eyes wide open.

So I tried.

So we know from the trailers that Us is about doppelgangers, and my god Lupita surely delivers through and through from both ends of the spectrum—she is both predator and prey, and throughout the film I am confused as to how to feel about her. At one point I fear for her life; at another, I am terrified of her cruelty, and that expression on her face—slightly off, not quite all there, and oh that pair of golden scissors. Watch this for Lupita, first and foremostly; should be a shoo-in for the next awards season.

Winston Duke plays her husband Gabe, and his dad humor is bonkers, I love it. I love Winston Duke, he must be a really funny guy, because he was funny as M’Baku of Black Panther, too.

The kids also deliver fantastic performances—it’s hard not to root for them. The most terrifying performance actually goes to Shahadi; I was so scared of her I was unable to finish my popcorn hahaha.

Lastly—the music in this is tops. That showdown between the two Lupitas is breathtaking—walang kukurap, bawal! The use of classical music through the key scenes complemented the already violent thumping in my chest. Ang ganda.

So yeah, tl;dr—try to catch this in the cinemas! The bigger the screen, the better. Necessary trigger warnings for: Blood, violent stabbing, children in violent situations. Par for the course, I think, considering the materials.

Found around the Internet:

  • There’s a billionaire from Sydney who is hiring a personal assistant to travel with him around the world. tl;dr—I’d read 20,000 fics of this.

  • A set of Avengers: Endgame posters were posted earlier this week, and I could not contain my excitement at the fact that Tessa Thompson will be returning as Valkyrie for this movie. So excited!

  • ANYWAY, speaking of AUs:
