2001 is 20 years ago, can you believe?
Hey there, thanks for opening! How are you this week? Time flies so fast, we're now almost in mid-September--which is crazy! You know what else is crazy? That 2001 is twenty years ago jfc. Anyway, some musings about that watershed year in this, basically all over the place, but I hope a couple of things can be useful. -K
Nothing screams watershed year louder than 2001--I'd just turned sixteen, and I was just about to get to the rest of my life. Pangako sa 'Yo was The Thing, alongside the impeachment trial vs then-President Estrada. That was the year's opening salvo--we ousted him twenty days into January. I was stuck at home, watching people on TV flock to Edsa. By June, I was in college, wondering about what happens next. How would I have known that some twenty years later I'd be stuck at home, trying to live through a pandemic?
I remember this mainly because I saw friends pointing out that Aaliyah, who died in a helicopter crash in 2001, is finally on Spotify. My feed has likewise been full of 9/11 remembrances as it marks twenty years this year.
For the most part, this pandemic has warped my sense of time; days just go on and on, and before you even know it, it's Friday again. When you're living from one day to the next, mostly unable to plan because of this government's impossible pandemic response, it just gets a bit hard to grasp even medium-term lengths of time, which is why when they pass it's always kind of surprising.
In any case, we do our proverbial best with the cards we've been dealt, so here we are, trying to make our days as interesting as possible so we could tell them apart.
