12 Things we watched in 2021 (a belated round-up)

Hey friend, thanks for opening! I’ve been remiss in making wrap-ups, so I offer you this very late listing of things we watched last year, in somewhat chronological order. Happy New Year! -k

I care a lot (Netflix)

Rosamund Pike cons seniors out of their homes and auctions off their properties, claiming “legal guardianship”. In it, she plays Marla Grayson, and she is very good at what she does. Also: VERY ATTRACTIVE LESBIAN COUPLE.

Attack on Titan (Netflix)

God-tier anime. Final season now out!

Hotel del Luna (Netflix) IU operates a hotel for the newly dead and the world-building is VERY GOOD.

BTS 2021 Muster ft JK setting stage on fire in IDOL

Mare of Easttown (HBO Go)

Kate Winslet is so good?!? Loved the whole smalltown whodunit premise. Everyone’s so awfully flawed, and Winslet spends 60% of her time on screen drinking bottles of beer, but jeez what a good time. Tight storytelling, stellar acting, and plot twist after plot twist until the very end. It’s great. I’m glad we’re able to binge it–I understand people actually used to wait for a new ep every week?? HOW??

Food Wars (Netflix)

What an enjoyable anime about food, and friendship, and competition, and devotion to craft. It’s a bit racy, so probably not for consumption with kids in the room, but otherwise: Please watch! We usually watch while having dinner HAHA.

Her Private Life (Netflix)

Stars Park Min-young (from What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim – also a riot) as an art curator who leads a double life as a passionate fangirl during her spare time. As with most K-dramas we’ve followed, this is just (chef’s kiss) so damn good, storytelling-wise. Can’t explain it without spoiling the good stuff – the best part about it is that we dove into this knowing little else apart from the Netflix summary. What a joy it has been so far. Bonus points if you are also, actually, a fangirl in real life (because we are.)

Soljiwan in Nevertheless (Netflix)

Someone compiled all the Soljiwan moments from Nevertheless in a Twitter thread, which thereby saved us from having to fast forward through the actual show BLESS

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (Netflix)

Definitely one of last year’s best watches. Well-done ensemble, and a PERFECT childhood best friends to almost lovers to friends lesbian arc with a really goddamn good metaphor at the core.

Midnight Mass (Netflix)

Managed to marathon Midnight Mass on Netflix over the Halloween long weekend and it was SO GOOD. Mike Flanagan has been a staple of our Halloween marathons the past couple of years, with Hill House and Bly Manor, so yeah we had high hopes for this one. It’s a different kind of terror, one that kept our heart rates up throughout its seven-episode run, but also kind of very familiar? Speaking of course as a Catholic school girl.

All Too Well short film (YouTube)

Loved the fact that this entire effort took a decade or so in marination; some stories really have ridiculously long gestation periods (me to my wips, probably haha). But seriously, I think some stories just really naturally come out in their own time.

One true pair (JLC x Bea) (YouTube)

That friends to lovers to strangers trope come to life. With a Jollibee product push. (One-piece chickenjoy with spaghetti, if you must know)

Hope you enjoyed this rundown! Keep safe out there.

XO,

K
