5

Gaël turned 5.

He's flashed all the kid's routes at the climbing gym - getting good. That night we dug out an old night light and counted stars. Passed out at forty-six.

Gosh guys.

Part of the good life is rooted in the Destroyer Of Worlds*. Let's not devolve this into a cliche about how my heart turns into undercooked chocolate brownie or some other rainbow-unicorn-sparkle parent shit. I'll do that next month and that's what the gram is for - shoutout.

Reflecting, I've got deep gratitude for the conversations we've shared recently. Complex-ish thoughts are starting to spill (in between the hours of questions about marvel movies - Hulk's limits are the main curiosity, can't break the earth, but can break part of it?). These conversations can end up being pretty honest - at 5, you're only a little dishonest. Sometimes it falls on me and sometimes my mistakes come up.

Hearing this from a little kid is pretty hard. You never realize what a mirror parenting is. You end up seeing a lot of yourself and parts that are pretty ugly. BUT you have to look. For me, these conversations end up shining a light into those spaces. Showing me what to work and focus on. I think I'm getting better and I know I'm better than I was before Gaël. Thanks little dude. On to another year

"There’s a wise saying that goes like this: A real gentleman never discusses women he’s broken up with or how much tax he’s paid. Actually, this is a total lie. I just made it up. Sorry! But if there really were such a saying, I think that one more condition for being a gentleman would be keeping quiet about what you do to stay healthy. A gentleman shouldn’t go on and on about what he does to stay fit. At least that’s how I see it.

As everybody knows, I’m no gentleman,"

- Haruki Murakami What I talk about when I talk about running

I love that. I've tried to keep my exercise habits out of this newsletter. I mean who really cares? That being said 2020 has started so well basically on every front and I really want to continue that into Feb. That means continuing to move and sweat. Send good vibes yeah?

Cowabunga dude,

DJ

Written listening to this.

* I say this in the best way possible. Total human wrecking ball. We've been getting complaints from the neighbors about the noise. Why?

"Daddy I can fly"
"What?"
*sprints across the room and jumps as high and far as he can*

The crash landings seem not to damage the vessel or spirit...
