North Koreans tell BBC they are being sent to work 'like slaves' in Russia

So, this BBC thing… Heard about it, right? North Koreans, slaving away in Russia. Fuckin’ Russia. These guys are desperate, I’ll give ‘em that. The war’s chewing through their manpower like a goddamn woodchipper on a Tuesday. They’re losing guys left and right – killed, crippled, or just plain runnin’ away, smart bastards. So, what do they do? They go to North Korea.
Yeah, I know, sounds crazy, right? Like ordering a veal parmesan from a vegan restaurant. But that's what the South Korean spooks are sayin'. These guys are reliable as a three-dollar bill, but this time, I gotta believe 'em. Moscow’s sucking those North Koreans dry – missiles, artillery, even soldiers – the whole shebang. It’s like a goddamn parasite, leeching off another parasite. And it ain't pretty.
I spoke to some guys – ex-pats, we call ‘em – that got out. Six of them. These cats were on some construction site, building apartments. Eighteen-hour days. Eighteen hours. I mean, I’ve had some long days, even back when I was just a punk with a shillelagh, but this is on another level. These guys are practically working until they drop. Two days off a year. Two. Days. That's less time off than Paulie Walnuts gets when he's got a stomach ache.
One guy, Jin, says he gets herded from the airport straight to the job. Some North Korean goon – a real piece of work – keeps him on a tight leash. "The outside world is our enemy," the goon tells him. Sounds familiar, huh? Except these aren’t made guys; they’re just pawns in a much bigger game. And the game's getting ugly.
Another guy, Tae, says his hands were so fucked up from the work, he couldn’t even open ‘em in the morning. They're practically falling asleep on their feet, and the supervisors? They beat ‘em. Fuckin’ beat ‘em. These guys aren’t even getting paid a decent wage – they’re being treated worse than animals, probably worse than some of the guys I put away, and they deserved it. It's brutal, it's inhumane. But hey, these are the communists. What do you expect? A thank-you note and a fruit basket? Fuggedaboutit.
Kang Dong-wa – some researcher, says the conditions are “abysmal”. You don’t say? A fuckin' genius. You think I need a PhD to see that? I coulda told ya that shit twenty years ago. These poor schmucks. They’re trapped, they’re used, and they're probably praying to a god I don't even believe in.
But you know what's funny? It’s ironic. Russia, all this big, tough, military power, begging for help from North Korea… It’s like a bloated whale relying on a pack of piranhas. And the piranhas are gettin’ eaten alive. Makes you think, huh? About power, about desperation… about veal parmesan. I could go for a slice right now. You wanna go grab a bite? This is giving me a headache.
